My Biggest Complaint About Your Unboxing Pictures

On this the opening day of the Apple WWDC 2007, I’d like to take an opportunity to ask any purchasers or reviewers of whatever new Apple product will be announced or not announced today, to be kind enough to exercise a bit of restraint and not post your unboxing pictures online, or anywhere for that matter.

I’m glad you got whatever it is you wanted so badly; new Pro, new , whatever it is, I’m happy for you. I don’t need to share in your joy by seeing pictures of you opening the box. I certainly don’t need to read captions of the pictures of you opening your box that say cool web 2.0 stuff like “Me opening my new [insert product name here] box!”.

If you’re really at a loss for content for your fringe tech review blog, do something else besides filling posts with pictures of you opening a box. Guess what? Once I’ve seen the box opened . . . I’ve pretty much seen the box opened. Whether it be on your blog (which I probably didn’t see) or some other rag somewhere else, once I’ve seen the iPhone birth from a box, I’m done. And never, ever under any circumstances link to a picture of someone else opening a box. That just means they got one and you didn’t.

Someday these product unboxing pics will become that really bad school picture you took as a kid. People will say “Dude, you got so excited about opening your [insert product name that will soon be worthless here - think Tandy TRS-80] you took pictures and posted them?”.

  1. Mac,

Would you be annoyed if I posted a VIDEO of my next unboxing. I could put it on YouTube and you could see it there?

  2. I was using the term “pic” loosely. IMHO, videos are worse.

Posting a video of you unboxing your product is somewhere just below posting a video of a family vacation on a public site and just above posting a video of you having sex with your wife on a public site. Once you’ve seen one vacation video, or a video of one person having sex with their wife, you’ve seen them all.

Just like a video of you opening your new macbook pro. Unless of course the video shows you dismayed at the fact that the machine didn’t ship with leopard. That might be worth watching.
