My Biggest Complaint About “Your Number Was On My Caller ID”

Me: “Hello.”

Them: “Someone called here.”

Me: “Excuse me?”

Them: “Someone called here, your number is on my caller ID.”

Me: “Who is this?”

Them: “What do you mean ‘Who is this?’ you called me.”

Me: “I don’t know. I’m sorry, maybe I dialed the wrong number. When was it?”

Them: “Two days ago. What did you want?”

Me: “I don’t think I called you, really.”

Them: “The hell you didn’t, your number is on my caller ID.”

I’ve had this conversation more than once… this week. We get it at work also. I even get it on my cell phone from time to time.

My biggest complaint about “Your number was on my caller ID” is that it makes me wonder why you people even have caller ID in the first place. Isn’t the idea of caller ID that you see the number the call is from, (hold on for the key point) YOU DON’T RECOGNIZE THE NUMBER, so you don’t answer the phone because you don’t want to talk to people whose numbers you don’t recognize.

Why then would you call a number you didn’t recognize? You don’t want to be bothered with unknown numbers the first time around, but then you call the number back to see who called you the first time… when you didn’t want to answer the call from that same number?

You’re killing me, people.

  1. This drives me crazy as well. People, if I didn’t leave a message, it means I don’t need you to call back. Sheesh.

  2. i get plenty of wrong numbers on my cellphone and so I’ve adopted the practice of not answering a number I don’t recognize. In addition I will not call back unless a message was left. I feel kinda stupid calling a number that I don’t know and asking who I’m calling. It also makes me feel like a bit of a needy lonely loser.

  3. Well, it depends on the situation. I wouldn’t purposely not answer the phone due to not recognizing the the number and then turn around and call it back, no. However, if I gave my number to someone and they called during a time I wasn’t able to get to the phone, I will call the unknown number back. If they say they dialed the wrong number or that they didn’t call, I just say “okay” and go on about my business. Just because that number is on the caller ID doesn’t mean the person who answers the phone was the one who made the call. So I leave it at that.
