Tonight, I tuned onto the Sci-Fi Channel as I figured that a Science Fiction program would be on. I relaxed on the sofa and thought to myself that “It’ll be nice to unwind with a science fiction show (rerun or otherwise) after a long day at the office and the ‘humdrum’ of life.” Surely, a Channel names “Sci-Fi” would have science fiction programming, correct? I suppose that if this reality we are in were “Bizarro World”, this common sense of mine would be incorrect, bordering on lunacy. Unfortunately, this isn’t “Bizarro World”, and what I saw on the Sci-Fi Channel at 9pm didn’t make any sort of sense.
To my amazement, what did my eyes see? No, it wasn’t another “Sentinel” episode or a repeat of “The X-Files” nor a cheesy science fiction movie such as “Leprechaun”, all of which would have been okay. Rather, my eyes clearly saw of all things…wrestling.
After confirming that yes, I’m not in “Bizarro World; the second thing I did was think to myself, “Surely, you’ve made a mistake and dialed the wrong channel”. I double checked by re inputting channel 68 into the control…and…STILL wrestling. I checked the digital channel TV Guide, and what did it list under the Sci-Fi Channel? The most horrendous thing of all was listed as under the Sci-Fi Channel, “WWE Monday Night RAW, Wrestling”.
To my chagrin, I was not mistaken. There are numerous Channels where wrestling is availble to be viewed by wrestling fans; wrestling belongs on channels such as “Spike TV”, “TBS”, or “USA”.
If it’s an issue of filling “dead air time”, then one would deduce that one would air reruns of old classic sci-fi programs such as (but not limited to): “Wonder woman”, “Bionic Woman/Man” or reruns of some of the newer series like “Firefly”, “Battle Star Galactica”, “Babylon 5″ or even (I shudder to think, but at least this is much better than wrestling) “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
Surely the Sci-Fi channel isn’t in such dire need of money that it’s leaders are allowing the programming guru’s to schedule and air wrestling so that WWE can add to the Sci-Fi channel’s coffers? One would think that “The Sci-Fi Channel” is named thusly so as it is supposedly for science fiction programming. Last I checked, burly men (hairy or otherwise, muscular or not), dressed in tights (no, they are not dressed as superhero’s), wrestling each other, knocking each other senseless with chairs/ladders, and talking smack to one another does not fall under the Science Fiction genre.
I sat there thinking to myself…”Hmmm…NOW is see the appeal of ‘NETFLIX’.”
In short, I submitted the above story along with the below questions to the Sci-Fi Channle feedback email address. Sadly, they’ve disabled their feedback email address:
1) What is the Sci-Fi channel programming guru’s thinking?
Note: Wrestling and Science Fiction….umm…I don’t see the connection.
2) What brought on this addition of wrestling onto the Sci-Fi Channel?

I heard somewhere that they justified it by having one of the characters be a zombie (not technically science fiction either). They are probably doing it because wrestling appeals to their core demographic: young males. I too find it detestable. But no more so than their run of movies such as “Mansquito”, and the upcoming film titles that I just made up that they must pay me for if they use: “The Stoat That Ate Detroit” and “Caterpillars of Terror”. I wish they’d concentrate on good material, but the market rewards “cheap and good enough”. So many good shows have gone bust because they cost more than the drivel that’s left when they leave.
I completely agree. I am disgusted that scifi runs wrestling of all things on a channel that is supposed to be fore science fiction shows. I sit there watching a nice episode of eureka and have to change the channel right after its over because I hate wrestling, I watch scifi for scifi shows there was a time i only watched scifi now i find myself changing the channel more often than not with their wrestling and also anime though it may be a science fiction anime this isnt the cartoon network. and the horrendous scare tactics which is totally fake, really do you know anyone that would call you or anyone else up out of the blue and say “hey I have a job for your even tho I am just your friend and not your employment agent”. LOL But I digress, Wrestling shouldn’t be on scifi it isnt a scifi show even if it has humans dressed up as zombies, vampires whatever it may be its really tacky and offensive to real scifi fans.
