My Biggest Complaint About Treo Volume

I have a 650 but my complaint applies to the entire line of Treo’s as far as I can tell. I have heard Treo 300x models and 700x models and nothing is loud enough.

Thank you very much, I can hear just fine.

In a noisy environment or even in your car with a window rolled down, all volume on the Treo is way too low. I find myself having to put people on speaker phone and adjust that volume down to be able to hear people when talking on the phone while driving the car or talking during virtually any other outside activity.

When I first got my Treo, the call volume on a headset was absolutely horrible, almost inaudible. I seem to remember a workaround where people realized if you muted and then unmuted the call, the volume level increased to closer to normal levels. There was even a download hack for this at one point that automated the mute and unmute operation. I think the Treo volume problem was address in one of the updates to the Treo software but call volume is still nothing like that of cheaper phones.

Treo ring tone volume is terribly low for noisy environments. I’m not talking landing strips at airports. I’m talking again about driving in your car with the radio on or the window down. Chances are good you might miss the call because the ringer volume just isn’t that loud. If you have both the window down and the radio on, forget it.

Comparatively speaking, I’ve heard Trac phones that are way louder than a Treo. My wife’s standard issue no frills phone can adjust the ringer volume to twice that of the Treo easily.

Call volume and ringer volume in noisy environments is an issue to consider when buying a phone, particularly one as feature rich and pricey as the Treo. Beware the volume history of the Treo line.

  1. yes. yes. yes. a thousand times yes. I had to buy volume care to get mine to be louder. but dammit if you need software to do this then the damn thing can be tweaked to do it - why doesn’t palm do it directly????

  2. For the record, the sound on my Treo 600 is also way to low and my treo is broken and is stuck on FULL VOLUME (I can’t turn it down). The odd thing is I had the old Treo 300 and I could hear fine. You looked like a Star Trek, tricorder toting, goober using it, but I could usually hear people better (not great mind you, but better).
