My Biggest Complaint About The Sports - Politics Analogy

Oh boy, here we go. We’re like 20 minutes into the first primary results from New Hampshire and I just heard it… “blah, blah, blah… you can’t go into four corners and try to the run the clock out.” WTF did he just say? Presidential politics is like basketball?

Does he even know you can’t do four corners anymore? Everybody has a shot clock now straight on down to rec league ball.

But I digress, my complaint is not about inaccurate sports - politics analogies, just the over-abundance of them.

Politics is a joke. I know that. But if the commentators are going to make a joke-like analogy about politics, can’t they just admit the whole thing is ridiculous and come clean like professional wrestling when they admitted wrestling was scripted “Entertainment” and not a sport at all.

Here is a brief list of sports - political analogy stupid-thingys that will make me pee in my pants when I hear them… probably before the end of the night:

  • “This is the first round of the playoffs.”
  • “That was like hitting a jumper at the buzzer.”
  • “He should probably punt.”
  • “That’s a great half-time speech.”
  • “This is only round [x] of a [>x] round fight.”
  • “He’s got the ball, now he’s got to run with it.”
  • “That was a big time fumble.”

And then there’s the mother of all sports - political analogies that will drop me out of my chair… “This is the Super Bowl of [primaries, caucuses, straw polls, and/or whatever’s].”

  1. The commentators really should be wearing eye-black and bicep bands if they are going to be doing all this arm-chair quarterbacking.

  2. How about “Comeback Kid”? Can you really be a “comeback kid” when we’re on the first primary of the year?

If you were supposed to lose in the beginning of the day but you actually won, it needs a little more to be a comeback. You’re probably just an underdog that won.

  3. i hate sports and i hate politics, so i find it all very fitting. we should put all the worlds pro-athletes with bad attitudes and million dollar contracts into a giant pool with every crummy politician who turned his back on his own policies and drop the exxon valdez on them so they can choke and drown in oil.

  4. hey do you have an email or “page” of somesort?
