My Biggest Complaint About The New Spongebob

I cant even watch these new episodes. Spongebobs voice is irritating, all he does is sing and cry, its horrible. Patrick is just a complete dumbass who cries all the time. Sandy is all of a sudden a scientist, what happened to karate, etc. The only characters who are still the same is squidward and mr. krabs. Is it me or have they just gotten bored and make these episode crappy. Remember how funny it was back then way before the movie in 2004. They used to relate to everyone including adults, it was funny and entertaining. Now its just kiddy and annoying. Everytime it comes on, i look to see if its a new or old episode, when all i see is (supervising producer: paul tibbett) i change the channel. They ruined such a good show, it sucks to see how much they have fallen. Not only do these new episodes suck, but once this show is off the air, nickelodeon is pretty much done, they have some on the worst shows on the air right now (fanboy and chumchum?) (penguins of madagascar?) What happened to the good shows (rugrats, jimmy neutron, etc etc) They make the worst shows now. I guess they have gotten bored. But getting back on topic, spongebob has gone down ever since they made the movie, the voices are different, the characters arent the same like they used to be, for some odd reason the characters look different, the animation just isnt the same, just take spongebob for an example and compare it to how it used to be. Im pretty sure the show wont last for another 2 years unless they hire old producers. All i can say is congrats on the 6 years of crappy low budget episodes.

  1. yes!!!!! it is so horrible now , when “where’s gary ” came out i let it slide but ever since then the episodes are poorly thought of the humor is ridiculous , Nick should change it back to exactly how it was or they should cancell it because honestly im tired of waiting through the theme song ,all excited, to see bull crap like “where’s gary” i also heard they are going to change the opening theme What is nick thinking ?!

  2. I agree that the show went downhill after the movie, which is around the time that creator Jay H. left to do other projects. They never do things like the “Ren & Stimpy”-type close-ups or rainbows over SB’s head anymore. It’s little details like that that are totally gone. Also, the much-discussed change in Tom Kenny’s voice is unbearable. He used to do SB in a much lower register, only using the high voice to show excitement. Now, everything is done in that high manic voice, and it sounds like Kenny’s got a lump in his throat. They should all go back and watch seasons one and two and take lengthy notes. The intelligence they used to have is gone.

  3. it’s irritating as hell to watch any episode released past the movie. and in my opinion, the movie was awesome. also, remember, “the sponge who could fly”? that had to be one of the last good episodes. what happened? i know one of the main creators of the show left, but that didn’t mean that the show had to completly change. it didn’t mean that the show had to start appealing to just kids. remember all the innuendos the old show had? that was because they wanted the show to appeal to everyone. but now it’s just mindless, nonsensical, regular childrens tv. i mean, i’m fine if you change the voices or the animation, but why did the writing have to become bad? i’m going to buy seasons 1, 2, and 3 on dvd soon, so my family dosnt have to suffer.

  4. This show used to be funny, and the older episodes are probably the only cartoons I still laugh at. The humor that used to be in the show only appeals to children now. The movie was decent, but after Stephen Hillenburg left the show, the wondrous world of Spongebob became commercial and artificial. The characters’ personalities are flat. Examples: Spongebob used to be just mildly naive, not completely retarded. Patrick acted as the wacky best friend who would do some silly things on occasion, whereas the new Patrick is just as retarded as the new Spongebob. Mr. Krabs was the somewhat greedy boss who Spongebob looked up to. Now, Mr. Krabs is a money-hoarding scrooge who’s sole purpose is to aqcuire all the money in the world. Squidward hasn’t changed a whole lot, but it seems as though the new Squidward is so pissed off at the world that he has given up hope and only says groan-inducing snide remarks once in a while. (I swear, though, he must’ve yelled, “GET OUT OF THERE!,” a hundred times in that slide whistle episode.) The humor in the show used to be clever and made all age groups chuckle and laugh. Now the show’s “humor” relies solely on randomness, which isn’t funny and may give children a few laughs. I mean, Seinfeld was most likely ended because they didn’t want this to happen to it. I just want one new episode that’s as memorable as The bubblestand episode, “Pickles,” or “Help Wanted.” (anchovies.)

  5. You said it, 100%. They lost me & my son, but there is a virtually endless supply of babies who beome the 2-year-olds the new shows appeal to, so the ratings hang on.

It’s a business lesson: why put time, money and creative energy into a money machine, when the machine can run cheaper and quicker without intelligence, originality or genuine humor (always in high damand/short supply in the TV industry)?

  6. I don’t even watch it on TV any more. I just stick to the first three seasons on DVD. The fourth season is mostly watchable, but after that, it’s horrible.

  7. Tell me about it!!! It is so depressing!!
Spongebob, next to avatar used to be my favorite cartoon which I can watch over and over and the jokes would never get old , but now it is plain absurd. Sponge bob has truly become a annoying coot and feel what squidward feels. Seems like there trying to cater to the kiddy market hence they have made Spongebob extra cheerful and nasal’ly and stupid and why the heck is he always shouting??? Or singing???

Am so disappointed with nick who had so many awesome cartoons. Why not bring them back??!! Pls!!!

  8. tell me about it new sponge is the worst I could go on and on about why the show sucks now. the worst part is that people don’t seem to notes in fact people give new spongebob more credited!! but I tell you if sponge bob had stared off like it is now it would not be popular at all. it use to appeal to kids 5-12!!! now it’s gone to 3-6 or something like that. this did not happen all at once it went downhill since 2005. it’s not going to get any better even if the old producers come back because there making more then ever and it’s so much easier then before.

  9. I watched Spongebob my entire life. I hate it now. What happened to Karate, Goo Lagoon, Grandma….and even Patchy?

  10. I’ve seen a couple of the newer episodes and somebody has definitely gotten Tom Kenney to tone down Spongebob’s voice to not be so over-the-top excitable 24/7. They still need a lot of help with the story lines, though. They aren’t half as clever as they used to be.

  11. you have it all wrong! the problem with the new episodes is that they are trying to make pre-schoolers laugh it is easier but not as good as before

  12. let me break it down for all you haters out there

first off sponge bob is the GREATEST cartoon to ever be created from 1999 when it was created to present day. For those of you who say that it sucks now because its changed obviously don’t understand that the change is brilliant. What i mean by this is that they changed sponge bob on purpose. think about this for a second. where the things that we found funny as kids still funny to kids today. the answer is no, witch is why the creators had to change sponge bob to make it fit modern expectations witch is not what some of us older kids and adults always like but if you go into it with an open mid you’ll see that sponge bob is still as AMAZING as it used to be just a little updated for the modern child

  13. no offence joshaut, but i dont think you’re looking at this the correct way. spongebob needed no updates for modern times, the old episodes are timeless. And if there are these kids you speak of that have this updated spongebob for them, i feel sorry for them, missing out on what spongebob truely was, a great cartoon. I agree no doubt that change is good, but this was not a change for the better. The old writers left spongebob, they didnt change it on purpose. this is why the episodes have detireorated. if they were as ‘amazing’ as you say they are now, just as they were then, then why is there so much hate? there are a few younger children around my community who have seen both the old and new ones, and they also agree that there is a noticeable change in the spongebob episodes. in short, the new one sucks ass.

  14. joobah spongebob did change on purpose. oh, and joshaut when you said “just a little updated for the modern child” you should have said “just a LOT DOWN-dated for the YOUNGER child”

  15. I think the new spongebob is ok something you watch when theres nothing on but I like the old one better I like the first 3 seasons they were studpit funny which made them good and they looked more cartoon then like something one the computer which is also good and I can’t stand that they made Spongebob even more studpit and a cry baby then he was before and Squidward is more Fruity then he was before he use to be like just a lazy kid whos bi now hes a total fruit and same thing with spongebob but I like the change to Mr.Krabs hes better being chep then lazy, But Patrick is more studpit before he was just someone who isn’t good at school but still nows what he needs to to get around but now its like WHERE DID HIS BRAIN GO? and Sandy use to be the fun loving action country girl that Patrick had a crush on but now shes like a science nerd lol thats not fun loving they need to make it more studpit funny then silly funny because its becoming to silly then it was and there going to lose all there watchers because I remember when you walked into a store and there was Spongebob every where but now you have to buy it off internet just to find Spongebob stuff this isn’t Spongebob and he doesn’t even remind you of a sponge any more hes looks more Squair then sponge

  16. The show might as well be called SpongeBRAT WHININGpants, because that’s all he does in the new episodes.

Not to mention they even changed the way he screams now. Before he made sort of “hoooooohhhh!!” noise. Now it’s an ear-raping “aagghhhhhh!!!” noise, and I hate it so much! I hate everything about the show now! It’s like the new writers are purposely making the episodes annoying as they possibly can.

  17. the worst part is that spongebob is doing fine anyway which is just stupid

  18. It’s still the same, the only reason it’s not as good as the old ones were is because you’ve seen the old ones and laughed at them more when you were younger, so your memory is that they were better as they were funnier to you then than they are now.

if anything, Sponge Bob’s actually gotten better, the older episodes are really slowly paced, and the animation was rough. the only thing that was actually better in the olden days is Tom Kenny’s voice, for some reason now adays it’s like his voice wasn’t high pitch enough for them so they just have him doing his regular voice with sponge bob’s mannerisms and helium.

  19. I’ve seen a few of the newer episodes and it seems like they’re back on track. Kenny’s voice isn’t as hysterical anymore and the writing is better. They’ve also gone back to little touches like the gross close-ups, a la Ren & Stimpie.

  20. i go back a see the new and the old episodes!! the old episodes are still funny and new ones keep getting worse and worse! why would they make spongebob better if it is doing fine anyway?

and to triman: the old episodes were BETTER paced then the new! and ya the old art work was rougher but that made it funnier!! and not in the he-looks-funny way but in the this-fits-in-with the joke-which-makes-it-funny way

  21. @Joe O’le

Actually the old artwork was better, too. (At least IMO) As a matter of fact, the season 1 style was probably my most favorite out of the whole series.

The new art just looks cheesy and the animation is lazy too…

  22. i like season 3 art work the best

  23. I like season 2 art, because it’s a mixture of both 1 and 3.

    So I win! :3

  24. Spongebob used to be soo cute!! Now he’s just a yelling, crying overly dramatic idiot and I can’t stand it. He yells most of the episode and the storylines have just become moronic. I used to love spongebob and mind you I am 24 years old and I still enjoy the old episodes, but watching the new ones with my kids (which they don’t even seem to enjoy) I find myself struggling to get through an episode. What happened to the show??!!! Please get back to the good stuff. This new stuff is absolute 100% crap. I have not found a single second of it entertaining.

  25. dear Sara about how old are your kids? i would like to know to help me support my point.

also i am sorry but spongbob is never going back to the good old day because the show is doing better then ever and they don’t have to work as hard because there new target age will laugh at all sorts of uncleaver stuff.

  26. I just noticed that if you mirror an old Spongebob episode on a program like windows movie maker, it kind of feels like you’re watching a new one.

You should give it a try if you have the files.

  27. You guys are acting like there wasn’t at least ONE good post-movie episode, seriously.

Also, the modern artwork is exactly the same as the season 3 art! It’s just a little brighter than it was before. So I don’t know why you’re all griping about it.

  28. to sonic

tack a closer look and you’ll see the difference.

also the reason why we are all griping about it is that the new art work fit with the funny jokes so with the new art work even funny jokes aren’t funny!

also yes season 4-6 did have some good episodes but 7+ have had zero.

  29. The funny thing is as you guys complain you people still probably watch and enjoy it.

  30. dear jimmy

    that is pretty funny.

to make it clear i no longer watch the show, and i don’t enjoy it.

  31. Too jimmy:

Yeah you might have been right back in 2007 or so, but not now.

  32. true, back then there still were some decent episodes.
    but not any more

  33. Voices are off, lip sink is off, animation not consistant versus original.
Characters are absent, story line is absent. Audience age target has been shifted, not cool for the young anymore. Facial expressions are hideous. Shall I keep on going?

  34. Season 3 was the best…season 6+7 made me mad, now all the new characters are so ugly, it annoys and distirbs me…now its just like a sitcom, they try to make you laugh every 5seconds, you end up laughing every 30 ,inutes. I really wish nickelodeon would get our complaints/advice…they need to make the animation like the third season, patrock needs to be less retarted, lazy, and stupid, they just kill the jokes by taking it too far…the jokes arent unique, a lot are just random, which isnt funny, its like ocarly, and mr.krabs needs to be less cheap. They need to bring back karate and the old sandy, they need to lower spomgebobs voice, and they NEED to stop egsagerating everything. Spongebob has gotten less smart too, more annoying, and sings way too often. Patrick doesnt know anything, it makes me surprised (in angood way) when he knows whats going on. When they come with a new name its usually something cheesy…and they NEED to get theyre facts right.
    1. Sandy’s last name is cheeeks not squirell.
    2. Particls last name just star, not starfish.
    3. Squidward is (surprisingly) an octopus not a squid. Etc.
    The list is endless…

  35. you both have it wrong.

    the problem isn’t those things.

the problem is that they took a show that all ages could enjoy
and made it a comedy version of Dora!

  36. Oh boo hoo, why don’t you cry some more about it? Spongebob used to be boring until the end of season 3. All of the elements you are complaining about the show losing are still there, just not as much.

The only reason you’re upset is because it went mainstream and started using different stories and humor. I really wish people would stop complaining every single time something goes mainstream like it’s a downgrade. If you are one of these people that complain about things going mainstream, it’s not the shows fault or the musicians fault or the books fault. It’s YOURS for having ****ty taste. If the majority likes it and you don’t then get over it because whatever it was that you liked about the show was bound to either end and never continue or go mainstream and change.

  37. How old are you, Drew? 13?

  38. Old enough to know you people are making a big deal about a Cartoon show that is meant for children.

  39. ikr!

  40. ikr

  41. this show is meant for 7 -10! thats why you guys dont like it cause its not in your age group

  42. dear caleb bradford

the maturity rating is for 7 -10!

the humor was for all ages before!

  43. Been a Spongebob Squarepants fan since 1999, and quite frankly, I’m very disappointed of what the show has plummeted into over the years.

    Here’s a summary of The Show’s decline…

    Seasons 1, 2 and 3 (1999–2004) — the classic episode years:
Pretty much all Spongebob fans would agree that you can’t get better than these years. The writing team was at its absolute best and the stories were all fresh. All of the greatest episodes came from this period (”Pizza Delivery” “F.U.N.”, “Chocolate With Nuts”, “Band Geeks”, etc). In these days there was no such thing as a bad episode. There wasn’t a single episode that did not make you laugh for 11 minutes.

Seasons 4–5 (2005–2007) — the poor episode years:
Season 4 marked the beginning of the gradual decline of Spongebob Squarepants. It was the first ever season to have bad episodes. Yes, there were still some goodies (such as “Skill Crane” or “Krusty Towers”) but some really poor ones were there in the mix, too (”Good Neighbors”, “All That Glitters”, and — worst of all — “Karate Island”). And by season 5 (when most of the original writing team had left), we had episodes that weren’t just poor: they felt like a completely different TV show. (Episodes such as “Ghost Host”, “20,000 Patties Under the Sea”, “Fungus Among Us”, “Breath Of Fresh Squidward”, etc). We were all thinking the show was going through a rough patch, but this was only the beginning of what was yet to come…

Seasons 6–9 (2008–now) — the crap episode years:
Ever since seasons 4–5, Spongebob Squarepants episodes had always been somewhere between excellent and rather poor. Then, in season 6, they began making absolute crap. Spongebob as we’ve known and loved was all but dead. Some of the worst offenders were: “The Splinter”, “Professor Squidward”, “Pet or Pests”, “House Fancy”, and many others. But probably the one moment when every Spongebob fan realized — for certain — it was no longer the same show, was when Mr. Krabs becomes obsessed over a penny that SpongeBob finds in “Penny Foolish”. This episode had absolutely no humor or plot. It concluded with Mr. Krabs selling out thousands of dollars he had just to receive one darn cent. The writers might as well of had him selling out the entire show’s fanbase, while at it. From here on, the crap episodes just kept coming more and more and these days you can go an entire season without finding a good one. Some people claim that recent episodes have been getting better, but I disagree.

  44. ya i agree the newer episodes have not been getting better. why would they? they are getting 1,000,000’s of dollars a day with minimum creative effort.

  45. I still remember when spongebob first episode aired. It was great best thing I’ve ever seen as a kid. I was 5 and I still remember it like it was yesterday. “Help Wanted” was hilarious and easy to follow. As the years went on I was given a younger brother to watch spongebob with and the episodes were great. We watched re runs of our favorite shows. Times were good. As I want through high school i faded away from spongebob and I hadn’t seen an episode till was in collage. (2009). And one day while visiting my baby bro we watched a brand new episode together. In don’t know what it’s called but its the one where spongebob sells everything he owns to buy “le spatula”. Even the cloths on his back. As he’s walking to work but ass naked I noticed the spatula looked like a cylinder pipe with flashing buttons and a flat spat at the end. As he tries to flip patties the spatula bends and turns moving by itself. The. It started to talk. Really?? What kind of sick **** is nickelodeon putting on air for these little kids to watch?!? A but naked fry cook talking to his spatula. Looking down at it as if it was a part of himself. Made my stomach turn. Then I noticed the faces and noises they make. It’s down right grotesque!! And these re runs of these shows I see over and over again. And I think something should be done about it. Remove spongebob’s from tv. And lock theses episodes up till the end of time.

  46. the new episodes are still good for LITTLE kids

the problem is that is is only good for little kids

  47. Anyone seen the season 2 Christmas special? IT IS SO FUNNY!

  48. yay is is

  49. My 3yr old loves the old spongebobs. He cried watching the facial freeze one and I don’t blame him. The new ones are more like ren and stimpy. I’m pretty upset. They have made the new ones more for teens it seems. Mrs puff is more rude and wore a ankle bracelet? :(. Spongebob is nothing like he used to be and Patrick I don’t even have to explain. I get so angry and wanna cry when the new ones come on.

I’m so disappointed. My 3 yr old loves him and seeing him get scared of an episode makes me sick.

  50. I used to think that SpongeBob SquarePants (SBSP) was alright. But not anymore ’cause I’ve noticed what a huge troublemaker its protagonist is. It sickens me how low he sank just to give a tremendous heaping of problems to other characters.

Take what SpongeBob does to Squidward for example. He has deluded himself into thinking that that octopus likes him so much that he doesn’t seem to care how many times he ruins his grumpy neighbor’s life. Therefore, I sympathize with Squidward due to his personality being like mine and wish that he’d just kill stupid sponge just as I wish that he’d kill all haters.

If anyone asks me, those haters of Squidward and Mrs. Puff are hypocrites who suck up to SpongeBob like he’s the king of Earth. Plus, they’re blind into seeing how wronged Squidward and Mrs. Puff are.

For Patrick, he seemed all right to me, But later on, he became dumber to the point that he doesn’t care if he antagonizes Squidward. It makes me wonder why SpongeBob has him for a best friend.

Don’t get me started on Mr. Krabs. Before, he was nicer and more open-minded. Now, he cares so much about money that he’s more than willing to harm and kill even his own family to get it. For that, I favor Plankton over him.

I justify Mrs. Puff’s wanting to kill that sponge for what he did to her. All the people who object to it are just as narrow-minded as the people who hate Squidward. I mean, how would they feel if they dealt with that yellow protagonist during every day of their lives?

Like Squidward and Mrs. Puff, Plankton has become more sympathetic. Back then ,I didn’t know exactly what to think of him. But after seeing how low Mr. Krabs sank, I developed pity for him. And so, I root for that one-eyed character.

As for Sandy Cheeks, I don’t really get why many people object to her being a major scientist now. I don’t find that pathetic. Besides, scientists are important people. Without them, this world would have a lot more trouble than it does.
