1. Makes me want to go nuts too when I see those anchor babies supported by welfare monies, ages 4 - 18, wearing manicured and pedicured nails, eating their breakfast at McDonald’s every school morning, and prancing around with their own personal cell phone.

2. My biggest complaint is that ignorant people complain about tax abuses when less than 4% of the US is on welfare at any one time and most are single mothers… very few on for more that 2 years and even less abusing the system. When I worry about where my tax money is going I don’t really worry about this… I worry about the BILLIONS of dollars my government spends on wars or tax cuts or a multitude of other real and serious dangers. But not about a child who’s mother is on welfare having a cell phone.

   But I guess that’s cause I’m educated and I have done my research. If it bothers people on here so bad they should probably educate themselves and go into a life serving in the social services and see if they can do something about the abuse that does exist as I am sure they can help somewhat… or they could use there energy to look for more serious abuses in our governments spending. But it would be a shame if they felt it was ok to hide what generally turns out to racial stereotypes and rumor and pretend it is fact with out research.

   Like I said my biggest complaint is that many in the American public don’t do the work to educate themselves on these matters and rely on shock jocks or biased new sources for their information. My biggest complaint is that these uneducated hate spewing Americans are a bigger social threat than an army of welfare kids with electronics. Just saying.

3. Do you know for a fact that the people you see with expensive items are on welfare? Are these people you know? Can you tell a latino citizen, resident or illegal alien by looking at them? You have a valid point. I just want to make sure you’re not going by any preconceived notion.

4. Well being a professional and now sort of running a local store it is a freaking eye opener. In Calif under EBT program I sell more chips, soda, Ice, Ice cream, Candy and any other junk food that one can imagine. I rarely can sell anything that is nutritious, raw,vegetables, meat, milk and or cheese. And these guys male and female have money to buy beer and cigarettes by visiting the store multiple times during the day. If one was unemployed and had time to be at home should hey not have the time to buy raw materials to prepare the food/ NO WONDER CALIF IS BROKE. I think I will double up the prices under EBT program so that the money runs out faster then others. In fact EBT customers do not even blink at the prices. Thanks GOVT no wonder the tax payer base is getting smaller by the minute. Heck I should be on it as well.

5. I know exactly what you are talking about. I used to live in a poor neighborhood and see this exact thing every time I went to the grocery store.
   all great new looking clothes, shoes, jewelry, cell phones, ipods etc etc and bought $150 worth of food with food stamps.

   the government allows this to go on. they don’t check anything with these people. they are more strict on people on unemployment than welfare.
   I feel as if you recieve government tax $ your finacial records should become public or at least open for review by welfare. too many of these people keep having kids to stay on the system that can obviously afford luxuries…they can afford to pay for their own food.

   You are complaining about Angry taxpayer not doing his research, maybe you should double check your own. There are 36 million Americans on welfare, one in three African Americans are on food stamps in in 790 counties in the U.S. and one in three children in 800 counties. Yes, I understand that there are other big issues to worry about, but does it not bother you to know that some of your hard earning money is going to people who think it is ok to depend on your assistance (because they rely on you more than the government)? Especially knowing that there are people who cheat the system? Did you know that the person who oversees welfare is encouraging people to get on it?

7. I saw a news article from the UK about a family who was to fat to work and was complaining because the government wasn’t giving them enough money. Poor them could only afford to eat pie’s with potato for meals as they didn’t have enough money to buy healthy food. BULL**** handing out money makes people lazy and stupid I don’t believe in it spend the money on shelters, soup kitchens instead, jobs and education about how to spend money wisely.

   But realistically it’s just easier for the government to through money at the problem they’re not idiots it’s your money not theirs.

8. THANK YOU for saying this!! I agree! I used to smoke and gave it up in part becasue of the cost. I’ve never been on welfare and am sick to death of paying for all these losers to sit on their asses, smoking and sucking off the public. I think they should be tested for tobacco use prior to getting any public assistance and once a month until they are off all assistance - especially state health insurance. Ugh, why do we let this keep happening?

10. I too am sick to death of all the welfare abuse that goes on around me. When I go to the super-market, I see people in front of me getting food and items I can’t afford to have and then pay with an ebt card. I look at them and they have all new clothes, shoes, phones and jewelry on. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE???? I worked since I was 16 y/o and at 27 hurt my back and had to change careers, I went to the welfare office for help when my unemployment ran out, I received a $150.00 ebt card and was told that was all I was able to get. How fair is that, I really needed help and after taking my money for taxes all those years, I get nothing, it’s BS! These people contribute nothing to society, they don’t even try. It is so disheartening to see my country go to the crapper in part by giving it away to people that don’t care about anything except what they can get out of it and a lot of them say they are owed it! Why? Did they contribute at all? It has to end, the middle class are the lossers, we can’t afford to have anything and make just above not being able to receive any help, but still have to pay fully for our way. We need to rethink our system, America has been crapped on too much.

12. The goverment is to be blame for the nonsense system.The system is to favor the people who do not contribute anything for the country and yet take advante of it. I can understand that some people may need assistance for a while until they can get on their feet, but it is different from depending on that assistance ALL their lives. I am a single mom who have been working for 30 years, yet my kid do not qualified for financial aid because I have an income that barely cover all my expenses. It is very unfair to see how the kids whose parent do not work or have never worked qualify to go to college for free, whereas my kid will end up paying a big loan right after college. What is wrong with the picture? No wonder so many people are taking the best way out “stop” working and let the system take care of them. Shoudl it be the other way around? You have contribute to this country now let us help you.

13. You know they are on welfare when they had high end t-bone or ribeye steak and they pay with food stamps and get alcohol beverages. It doesn’t matter if you are educated or not and do research. The fact is that it does happen and it happens a lot. I know some people who are on state welfare and a local church helps them. They have a nice car, iPhones, go out to eat all the time, has the newest dvds comes out that week, and wears name brand clothes. You can’t tell me something is wrong with this picture, but yet my taxes are going towards that and people who pay tithing pay for it. That is just wrong. What makes it worse is that they just had a baby and they were overheard it was to get more money from welfare. You can’t tell me it doesn’t go on. It goes on more than what we think. It is just dumb that people are that lazy and won’t get off there butts to punch in a clock everyday like the rest of us. I understand that there are those who actually need it, but it seems that the system is being more and more abused. There should be stricter policy enforced, but that is just me.

14. The government is taking an extra $70/week outta my PAYCHECK every week for back taxes I owe. I live in a small town, work at a manufacturing plant. After my back taxes, child support, rent, gas ($50/week) for truck, I can’t afford groceries some week. Especially if my power or phone bill is due! I even had to cancel cable. If I tried to get any help, they would say I GROSS to much money. I kill myself 40 hrs./week, just to pay my bills. No money for anything else. I am in the Working Poor Class. Now, ask me again why my biggest complaint is people abusing welfare!!

Personally, my boyfriend’s mom is one of these lowlife individuals. She even commits welfare fraud! She lives in a government housing apartment which she doesn’t pay for and she has 6 people living in the house when there’s only supposed to be two! She is 40 something and PERFECTLY capable to work and pay up like everyone else. But instead she spends her days getting loaded on weed and cigarettes. Makes me sick. Taxpayers against welfare. The department of human services clearly ask for information about a clients car such as the year, model, value and if the vehicle is valued at 4000 dollars or more you can be cut off. They also require you to give them your financial information such as bank accounts, property owned, laws suits filed, lottery winnings. You’re obviously an big mouth idiot that hasn’t even taken the time to research any of this information for yourself! If your so upset that you truly believe some poor person is using your hard earned tax dollars on luxury cars Iphones and living like kings why the **** don’t you actually take the time and find out how much someone on welfare actually receives! Each situation is different but only single moms get welfare men do not, men can apply for food stamps NO CASH assistance.     For the record, I’m sure you’ll say I am on welfare, but I assure you that I am not, nor have I ever. Do I know people that are or have been on welfare? Yes. Some that deserved it (and are also off of it now) and some that do not and to no surprise are still on it. We’re not against welfare, we’re against people abusing the system. Can you honestly tell me that you believe people should abuse the system? That people should not work and just take in the government check just because they can? That’s sick. The welfare system was meant for those who need it and I don’t think anyone here is saying otherwise. We all know very well that some people need it either because they are disabled or have lost their job, etc. We just don’t appreciate those that abuse it.

    Look at Democrat run states and see how well off they are…..Illinois, California, New York, etc. Seriously go look it up. Don’t just assume you know or assume I don’t know. Look it up for yourself and know the facts. I encourage everyone to look it up and know for themselves. Don’t just take someone’s word for it even if you believe that person is telling the truth. And please do not believe the media without cross checking them. Tell me now that Democrats know how to run anything. All they do is spend more money than they have and go in debt more and more. Sound familiar??? It’s the same attitude that these welfare abusers have. Spend other people’s money and never worry about the consequences. Welfare has a place and a purpose. I have seen it help people that need it, but I also have seen those exact people that we are complaining about who have their iphones, name brand clothes, etc. and are on welfare. It’s sickening how many people are lazy and don’t want to work. Those who are truly disabled deserve welfare. Those who are on tough times deserve welfare until they can get back on their feet. Those who take in a government check and sit on their ass all day and never try to do anything for themselves do not deserve welfare. It’s the Democratic way to make people dependent on the government so that they need the government and can’t do anything for themselves. It’s a step towards socialism. Oh and don’t call Republican’s/conservatives racist. Know your facts. Republicans are the ones that fought for the 15th Amendment rights for blacks to vote. Southern Republicans at that. The North did not want blacks to have the right to vote. Look it up. Don’t assume you know and don’t assume I know. Look it up for yourself and know the facts for yourself. It’s from years and years of lies from the Democrats that History has been twisted to make it seem like Republicans are racist. Just because we know Obama is doing a horrible job as President, does not make us racist. If Herman Cain were still in the running I and probably the majority of Conservatives out there would love for him to be our next President.

    I encourage you and all other Democrats to check the facts of everything Obama is saying (because so much of it is twisted lies) and look at the History. It should tell you something when Democrats are known for spending and sending their States that they Govern into unbelievable debt. Those are statistics that don’t lie.

    Democrats are for higher taxes while Republicans are for lowering taxes. Not just for the rich, but across the board because they know that the Country benefits from lower taxes between all classes. Why do they know this? Because it’s been proven time and time again in the past. When you lower taxes revenue goes up. When you raise taxes revenue goes down. Would you rather make 10% of $1,000 or 1% of 1 Million dollars? It’s the same basic idea. But none of this matters if you’re spending more than you take in like our current president is.

    In a socialist government you will eventually run out of other peoples money to spend. And then you’ll be left with a whole lot of people sitting around on their asses waiting for their check to come in but nowhere for it to come from.

    Everyone should cast their vote for who they feel is the best candidate for our Country. Don’t vote for someone because of their race and don’t not vote for someone because of their race. Vote for them because of what they can do for this country, and remember to ask yourself what has Obama done positive for this country in the last 3 1/2 years? Has the economy improved? Was the national debt reduced compared to when he took office? Did he do what he said he was going to do? Is everything he’s saying about Romney true? Look it up. If you can honestly answer yes then by all means vote for him. I’d vote for him if even half of that were true. You’d be surprised how much stuff they’re saying is true and telling their followers that they can fact check it with Washington post, etc. when if they really would fact check would find out that it was a complete lie. I remember sitting in my living room watching Obama on TV thinking to myself. “This guy doesn’t seem bad at all. A lot of what he’s saying is good. He has the right idea”. The only problem is that he never delivered on any of that. Too many times he has said what people want to hear and never delivered. Way too many times.

44. For the person that worked 11 years; whoop dee do. Try 30 years +10 + 9 years. I bet you can’t add that up. When I was getting my undergraduate degree there was a woman I came to know who was on welfare. I was working full time 3p.m. - 11 pm while going to school full time. I never missed a class; she was always absent. The state was paying for her education. As the end of the year approached and we were both graduating I asked her what she would be doing. She stated she was going to take a break for a while before looking for work. OMG. She really needed a break poor thing. Additionally, she stated she was going to buy a class ring. Myself, the full time worker, could not afford a class ring…..If you are poor and need government assistance you would think you would use any extra cash for necessities not jewelry.

    Welfare recipients are allowed to receive welfare from 2-5 years. I was just laid off and after a year and a few months my unemployment ran out. Why does the laid off worker who never chose to be unemployed get less time than the welfare recipient who is usually able bodied and capable of working. People who work and lose their jobs due to lay offs should not be cut off after a year. What makes people on welfare so unique?

Poor little you. For those of us who work, this has always been the case. Employers check references and have for ages. Duh.
    Unemployment due to lay off. I only received benefits for 1 year and those of you on welfare say, “oh, we’re only allowed to be on welfare from 2-4 years.” You poor souls. Government has it all backwards. Welfare recipients should be cut off in 1 years and those unemployed due to lay offs should be able to receive benefits from 3-4 years!

46. Well, I’m disabled. I’m not lazy at all. I worked until I literally dropped. I would give anything to go back to work. I would like to know who these people are who are getting assistance and living the I good life are and how they do it because I am currently on assistance until my disability claim is approved….and I’m broke broke broke.
    I don’t smoke, drink, or have any expensive habits. I drive an old piece of crap car. I lost my beautiful home, and now live in apartment a quarter the size of it. I have food stamps, but I buy store brand stuff and eat cheap. I do have a cell phone, but it’s prepaid, a cheap plan, and my primary phone as I do not have a home phone. My kids used to have cell phones when I was working, but they got cut off since I am not working anymore.
    I’ve had the same pair of sneakers for a year now.
    My child support goes to the state in return for the assistance I receive, and I signed a waiver saying I must pay back what I am getting now when my disability is approved.
    I’m not complaining, just saying that is the way it is.
    So stop your bitching. Don’t be ignorant and think that everyone is the same. There are people that abuse the system, and they should be weeded out and cut off. Life sucks, it’s expensive, and we all want what the rich people have, but too bad. We all can’t have it all. I wish I could go back to work more than anything in the world. You people think I like this kind of life? I hate it. And I hate ignorant ****s who think this is an awesome way to live and that I’m a parasite. Blow me.

59. My own cousin called me a lazy piece of **** (I am now crippled thanks to lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and brain lesions that cause me to have problems walking). He forgets that when he got into a car accident (he was drinking, totally his fault) and shattered his pelvis and broke his leg and arm, he was laid up in his mother’s house eating HER food that she bought with food stamps. Also, he had no insurance as he had no job, so medicaid paid all of his medical bills. But that’s ok, right? I’m a piece of ****, and he’s not? What makes me any different that he was? Because he has a job now and I cannot work anymore? I worked hard when I was able…I even worked past when the doctors told me I had to stop. That punk drank most of his life away, was drinking and driving, got into an accident, had the government pay his medical bills, and for 6 months lived off his mother’s food stamps…but now that he is well again, and he is working, he is all of a sudden all high and mighty?
    Whatever. I am tired of being judged. I paid my dues. I wasn’t a rich woman, but I lived comfortably, and I gave to others in need when I had it. It’s not fair that now that I am in need through no fault of my own, I should be treated like a subhuman piece of trash.

65. Oh here is another thing: Medicaid only pays for 6 medications a month. I am on 20+ meds a month…and those are life sustaining meds, excluding pain meds, depression/anxiety meds. My doctor told me to choose my life or my job…yet I had to give up my insurance and pick or choose which meds I want to take to stay alive. COBRA will cost me $1200/month. I want to go back to work so badly. I hate this miserable existence.
    Yeah, I’m partying it up, alright. I don’t go anywhere, never eat out, everything I own is used, and I’m wondering how I’m going to buy my kids school clothes.

87. I was in the hospital (adrenal crisis…quite serious, weaned off my steroids too quickly, and if my friend didn’t happen to come check on me when he did and I had fallen asleep, I would have slipped into a coma and died), so I missed out on part of this conversation.

    Thank you to those who defended me. I am typing this on a laptop (gadget) I bought in 2007 when I started NURSING school. I am educated, too. I am in my friend’s living room using her wifi (not that it matters, but since it was brought up). I have been slowly progressing into being disabled since childhood. Just to clarify, it was my cousin who was in the car accident (he was drinking and driving…and he had no insurance, no home, but stayed with his mother who collected cash and food stamps, which he used. Yet he calls me no good for accepting welfare now).

    I live in subsidized housing. I collect $199/month in cash, and I also get food stamps. My child support goes right to the state to pay back what I get. I am in the process of applying for disability. When I receive my disability, a portion will go back to the state to repay what I collected. I signed a waiver. I’m not complaining. This is the way it is. So if you want to complain that I am abusing the system, sit on it and spin.

    Not that it is any of your business, but I am getting help typing this. I have lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogrens Syndrome, epilepsy, dystonia, stage 4 endometriosis, cognitive dysfunction, and I am going blind. My lupus has affected my brain, lungs, kidneys, and heart. I had a minor heart attack a few weeks ago. I started having grand mal seizures again. I have repetitive movements in my hands, legs and feet that are just like spasms and are painful and crippling. I am on high doses of muscle relaxants, gabapentin and seizure meds to help stop this and my seizures as well. It is ineffective, and at times I cannot express myself. My children (my son is typing this for me) go to every doctor appointment, every ER visit (and there are many of them because I fall, collapse, have seizures, go unresponsive a LOT) with me because I cannot express myself at times. I am too weak to shower at times. I need assistance to get out of bed. I had three surgeries in ONE year…and I need yet another surgery to correct a contracture in my hand.

    There is so much more. And it is SAD that I (or really, her son, as this is who is typing this) have to explain why I am really borrowing CENTS from you. I’m paying it back, really. Sorry to inconvenience you for a measly >$0.10 from your checks. Seriously. But it’s ok. I almost Died this past week anyway. I could work, though, right? I can’t even take a goshdamn shower anymore….

    The problem is not necessarily THE SYSTEM, although we, of course, SHOULD close loopholes that allow certain folks to take advantage just b/c they don’t wanna work or get a job. However, we must NOT punish those who ARE working hard or trying to get good jobs or do what they can with what little meaningful education they COULD get, esp. in a poor neighborhood but still have to take some benefits just to get by! I’m sure there ARE plenty of hard-working folks who work 2 or 3 jobs but STILL need sh*t like Medicaid because… THE JOBS IN THEIR AREA SUCK and don’t pay well! Or whatever the case may be

    Hell, I have a BA, and I barely have found any openings in my field! I’ve applied for all the ones I’m qualified for (as well as some others), but it’s such an uphill battle in this economy. Besides, it’s probably not always so much a problem of, “They don’t want to work or CAN afford all the stuff they need or want but simply live off the dole so they don’t draw down their savings” but THE FACT THAT SOME OF THEM MAY BE FINANCIALLY ILLITERATE OR SIMPLY BAD WITH MONEY, to say the least. Of course, that doesn’t EXCUSE their behavior, but we should at least try to encourage them to think long-term about their financial decisions and incentivize SMART use of these benefits, if they really need them.

    Remember… just because someone DOES spend a lot of their money on “luxury” items, there’s no reason to assume, “They’re not low-income.” They may just be the type that blows their money on frivolous or expensive sh*t. However, if the government DOES have solid proof that some of those folks ARE simply wasting their benefits for frivolous crap that doesn’t help, they should probably at least give them a stern warning (2 or 3 strikes?), and if they DON’T clean up their act, then they’ll get cut off. Now, someone ‘cheating’ the system to get a “free” cell phone, “fancy” cars (if that’s even possible on America’s meager welfare state), etc. definitely is screwing up. HOWEVER, an ADULT who works hard every day but is still poor enough to need a few benefit programs to get by but blows some of it on “worthless” or junk food has every right to!

    If you wanna argue that maybe it contributes to extra obesity, that’s fine. But, if you ask me, food and sustenance are food and sustenance. As long as it keeps them going… I mean, it’s not the best use of sh*t like food stamps, but for a lot of folks, it may be all they’ve got to keep them going after all the bills are paid, gas prices, etc. Besides, don’t you know anything about SCIENCE? Cheap, fattening, unhealthy food tends to FILL YOU UP MORE (or at least quicker), so that’s usually more attractive to poor folks.

    In the long run, however, I think the REAL solutions are a) fixing our education system b) making higher education MUCH more affordable and accessible to all c) fixing healthcare costs and making it easier to obtain coverage (and/or things like Medical Savings Accounts) and d) doing SOMETHING to get companies to hire more folks with REALLY good-paying jobs w/ decent benefits (i.e. the employee-management social contract there USED to be until the 1970s that kept us going) instead of cutting benefits left and right, laying folks off, etc.

    I mean, just think about how much MORE competitive we’d be in the world economy IF EMPLOYERS DIDN’T HAVE TO PAY FOR HEALTH INSURANCE (because there were EASIER ways for folks to obtain decent coverage). Plus, it just keeps people in crappy jobs they don’t want that may or may not reflect their ACTUAL SKILL LEVELS and be right for them.

Food stamps are only about $140 a month. Unless you RARELY get hungry and live by yourself, $140 a month to stay healthy with the standard 3-meals-a-day (assuming they don’t eat out much) is probably a bit of a challenge. Some folks who ARE poor or live in poor areas obviously DO work 2 or 3 jobs, too! I mean, folks who are wealthy or semi-wealthy usually DON’T have to work that many jobs… BECAUSE THEIR CURRENT JOBS ALREADY PAY WELL! Although the level, esp. nowadays, is kind of exaggerated, there is empirical evidence to support the notion that, as America and much of the world industrialized and became economic titans, the amount of hours people had to work to make the same amounts as BEFORE were reduced sharply thanks to high economic growth.

    Meanwhile, we have LOTS of executives in boardrooms who MAKE MILLIONS, some of which DON’T EVEN DO A GOOD JOB at bringing a decent return to their firms! Why do THEY deserve so damn much? And don’t tell me, “We need inequality to keep incentives going and encourage entrepreneurship.” There’s PLENTY of economic growth and entrepreneurship, as well as high incomes, in EUROPE, for christ sake!

    Hell, the total GDP of the EU is about $17 Trillion. Income inequality in Scandinavia, for instance, is FAR LOWER, and poverty rates are far lower as well. “Oddly”
    But, according to most measures, Scandinavia RANKS PRETTY HIGHLY IN ECONOMIC COMPETITIVENESS GLOBALLY! Imagine that…
    Maybe inequality and growth aren’t really such “tradeoffs” after all? I mean, if you can EVENLY disperse the benefits of growth w/ high incomes WHILE STILL ALLOWING SOME FOLKS TO GET RICH, esp. if they open businesses, why not?

    Recent OECD studies, for instance, seem to indicate that social mobility in terms of BETTER EDUCATION and access to it, IS BETTER IN WELFARE STATES LIKE SWEDEN.

96. Hell, even in JAPAN, where complaining is largely frowned upon, esp. regarding employment and making a living, and union membership is far from the highest, they have LOW INEQUALITY! Firm leaders ACTUALLY SEE THEMSELVES AS MORE EQUAL TO WORKERS, and- get this- THEY PLAN FOR THE FUTURE! Corporate leaders in places like Japan THINK LONG TERM; American ones think short-term, which, I think, HINDERS our competitiveness and gives them all the more incentive to take drastic steps like cutting jobs when it’s probably unnecessary. Many Japanese businesses TEND TO GIVE THEIR WORKERS VERY DECENT PAY AND BENEFITS, lifetime job security if they’re loyal, and much more of an open relationship between employees and bosses.

    Of course, the Japanese welfare state and benefits are far from generous, by any means, so if you lose your job, you’re kind of f*cked, except with regard to a few major costs like healthcare. But the Japanese model of CAPITALISM is def. something we should at least TRY to emulate or copy from somewhat. America’s “rugged individualism” style is clearly a failure in 2012, and it leaves far too many people behind. It’s far too cutthroat and cares more about MONEY than ACTUALLY OBTAINING PROSPERITY SO PEOPLE CAN MAKE ENOUGH TO GET BY but also have time to be with their loved ones, take a vacation every now and then, etc.

Wrong! certain forms of depression are absolutely classified as a disability so you’re 100% incorrect! how do I know? because A- I worked for the DHS and severe depression is classified as a disability and you can with a doctors acknowledgement in writing receive assistance through the state. 115. I have experiential knowledge of all forms of depression; another excuse not to work. There are simply some doctors that are willing to put their necks out and write letters.
     I knew of a person claiming such a disability and she could not work. However, she could go bike riding and went to the movies often. She managed an apartment building. She went on an extensive vaction to New York and more, yet the scam went on. The doctor wrote the note and the person receives disability. There is fraud there as well. With severe depression I bet you can do a lot of things in your life.

129. My sister bashes those on welfare. She receives the EBT card for food ($500 a month), kids have Medicaid, and her day care is paid for by the state ($400- 700 a month). I consider that welfare.

     What bothers me is she can afford her nails to be done, pedicures every so often. Name brand clothes. All 3 of her kids have worn Nike’s since they we born. Both her vehicles are worth over $4000 each (she put 1 in someone else’s name). House is in our mom’s name. Medical classes were paid for, but she couldn’t get a job at a hospital since she couldn’t pass the drug test. Her Newports cost $6-7 a pack. She doesn’t even have to feed her kids but maybe 7-10 meals a week out of 21 meals. She will give her EBT card to people to use and they give her cash. She doesn’t pay her consumers or water for 2 months and it’s OK because the state of Michigan will pay for it when she receives a shut off notice (one time per year). Of course there is her cable, internet, and cell phone service….all with every bell and whistle possible.

     But, she’s not on welfare and she’s doing it all on her own. Michigan gives her benefits that are more than what she makes in a year. How is that doing it on her own?

     I am sure there are people who really do need the help. but then there are people like my sister who want to complain about those who sit on their butts and receive welfare, when she is no better than they are. Very frustrating.

To disabled mom: sorry you are having medical probems. we do however need to clarify something..you are not paying back the govt or taxpayers with your child support; the state is taking it because it believes that fathers should support their children. 137. Hey everyone, I understand the feelings about people abusing the system. I have seen a FEW people that do that however, I am on section 8 housing, I work 40 hours a week sometimes more because I also own my own business, I’m a single mom and reciebe no child support. Yes I do own a computer that I bought with my own EARNED money , and I use it to better myself through online schooling so that I don’t have to be on welfare the rest of my life. I sometimes wear nice clothes because I find good deals on brand name clothes at garage sales and thrift stores because rich people dispose of clothes after wearing them a few times … I am not lazy. I have a handicapped neighbor also on housing and two other neighbors on section eight going to school to be nurses and doctors, we all have kids some of us single… We live in a town of about 2000 people and yes probably the only place hiring in this economy is McDonald’s, which is 7:25 an hour .. Even if a person worked 40 hours a week on that wage it would not be enough to live in an apartment without getting help. I understand how upset people are about sponging, I get pissed about it too but just know there are some of us on welfare who are not lazy and we are trying so ease don’t stereotype us all in one category. My tax money goes to it as well .. So I have a voice too.

142. Here is the deal I am on welfare. A few years ago I screwed up my back on the job and now I cant work.
     Now I have to listen to people bitch all the time about welfare and social security and I watch these same people go to work and do nothing. Example I watched as six city workers stand around an intersection and work on a malfunctioning signal light. One standing in the electrical box, two in their city bought truck, one leaning on a shovel, and the other two sitting on a transformer. Mind you they are not digging get the **** off the shovel. This same city light has not worked right in years and they will be out there again next year.

     You think all people on welfare and social security are after the system. I can tell you this if you would have given me a week, by myself, I would have fixed the light guaranteed to have no problems for another 20 years. 153. Ok. I was attacked for being welfare scum long before I even knew welfare existed. My family was working class and I had to wear the cheap shoes. This was a rarity in the affluent schools I attended. Anyway nobody even got to know me, they didn’t want to get to know me. I worked for my lunch by leaving class early and going to the lunch room to help serve meals and clean up after. Nobody had free lunch in that school. I didn’t know why I was being called a scumbag by everyone. I had no friends. My home life was terrible with my parents constant fighting and no peaceful moments. I was pulled out of school several times so my mom could run away from my dad. It wasn’t fair to me. I was in the fourth grade. I fell behind and was put in special ed. Now I was hated for being both a scumbag and retard. EVERYONE bullied me constantly and I was beaten at home. I developed worse learning disabilities then I was born with because mental illness was developing. When I was 12 I lost touch with reality and was hearing voices. This was after years and years of constant abuse. When I was 15 it was either kill myself to stop the bullying or run away from home. I ran away from home. I ended up in a hospital and then a group home for teenage girls. When I turned 18 I was so traumatized I couldn’t trust anyone. They decided I’d end up homeless so they put me on SSI and put my into the mental health system. This was back in 1985 when it was a lot harder to get. It took me a LONG time to recover enough mental health to be able to even walk past a high school. None of the people I went to school with show any remorse. I think they figure I am just the welfare scum they thought I was. They stick their nose up at me and ignore me on classmates. Ha. I bet they think I think the world owes me a living. All of this is just poison. All the welfare hatred is self fill-filling prophecy and it spreads. You are not solving the problems by your hatred, you are creating more.

     Disabled Mom–FOR THE LAST TIME, people here are talking about those who abuse the system, not those recipients who genuinely need help. By the way, try having some ****ing gratitude for the help you receive. Disabled or not, you are not ENTITLED to a damn thing.

     We need to start issuing assistance in the form of debit cards acceptable only at grocery stores. NO cash withdrawals, under any circumstances. NO tobacco, alcohol, or “fast food” items (in this area, take-and-bake pizzas and anything else in the stores where they are purchased–seasonings, desserts, sodas, even pizza cutters–can be bought with food stamp cards) should be allowed. I don’t think we should go as far as testing welfare recipients for tobacco/alcohol/drug use (just another expensive waste), but they should definitely not have any way of getting these items using welfare money (some places simply allow the direct purchase; in other places, cash withdrawals are available–that needs to stop).

     Food, clothing/shoes, medicine, hygeine supplies–these things are necessities. Hell, in this day and age, I would even go so far as to say that a basic cell phone, with BASIC service and features, is a necessity. Obviously, it’s not “necessary” in the same way that food and shelter are necessary, but it is necessary to have some way of being contacted and/or contacting others, especially if you’re looking for work.

     Smartphones, designer clothes/shoes/purses, tobacco/alcohol/recreational drugs, video games/gaming systems, other electronics (except for medical devices, obviously), cable/satellite TV service, luxury cars (plus maintenance and repair costs), expensive toys, outrageous birthday parties (no, your kid does not NEED a private, catered, fully-staffed party with $500 in gifts JUST FROM YOU for his/her 3rd birthday, for ****’s sakes), restaurant/fast food meals, internet service…these things are NOT necessities. No one is entitled to them. If you can afford them, and you want them, feel free to buy them. If you are on welfare, you can’t afford them. Period.

     We’ve blurred the line between wants and needs. We’ve become so unbelievably entitled and self-important that we genuinely think we DESERVE whatever the hell we want, whenever the hell we want it, regardless of whether or not we’ve actually done anything to earn it.

     Parents, do your kids a favor–give them perspective. Teach them that they’re not entitled to jack ****. Make them work for the things they want (not need, want), and expect a good attitude throughout the duration of the job. Don’t reward them for half-assing it. When they do something well, encourage them with appropriate praise. Teach them to find happiness outside of material things. Teach them to recognize their own good fortune and appreciate the things they have. Try to help them understand the difference between helping people who actually need it, and being taken advantage of by people who simply think they deserve an easy life financed by the government.

176. I know 5 different people on welfare, food stamps and cash assistance. 3 of the 5 drive extremely expensive cars, mercedes, range rover and audi. I know they are on welfare because I have been told by them. I believe hard times can come to anyone and assistance should be available for them but that is not the norm. The people I know are quite proud of how they can live the high life on other peoples money. The cars are simply put under another family members name, not saying they bought the cars with that money but if my daughter was on assistance and I could afford to buy her a range rover you best believe I would rather get her out of a section 8 housing situation, off food stamps etc and have a drive a reliable reasonable car. I too have seen people in the market with food stamps dripping in gold and found them getting into an expensive car. Big screen tvs mani’s pedi’s are always present and like it or not that is a fact and it is disgusting! I at 54 years old have worked steady for 35 years and now for the first time am on unemployment. I have just received a cut to my unemployment and I am very angry about it. I also know of one particular mother who uses her money that should be for her daughter for weed, new sneakers 2x a month and constantly gives the kid rice for her dinner. Open your eyes these are facts!
