My Biggest Complaint About Stupid Purposely Misspelled Website Names

It was cool when ‘Flickr’ did it. Like most stupid things, the first time you see something stupid you think it’s cool, you want to try it, and then realize you shouldn’t.

Why are developers still pushing stupidly misspelled names on us years after it was cute? Can they not come up with anything better or are other people just totally drawn to this crap? Are there no more domain names left? Do you have to make sh** up or are you keeping some Web 2.0 mogul joke thingy going?

As if doing it once with ‘Digg’ wasn’t bad enough, now Kevin Rose has gone and done the deed again with ‘Pownce’. Come on, you people are more talented than that. This stuff is just ridiculous.

  1. I find them irritating too, but it’s all about the domain name… and all the ones that use correctly-spelled words are taken. It’s tough to come up with a good domain name these days.

  2. The reason is actually because most words and word combination URIs are already taken. Some are taken and not even used there for making the URI useless.

    For example: flicker.com
