My Biggest Complaint About Storing Important Records In Your Car

I help people in serious financial trouble all day long. Two or three times a day, I have this conversation:

Me: “OK, I can do [whatever] for you but I have to see your [tax returns, paycheck stubs, bank statements, etc.].”

Them: “Oh, I think I have that in my car. I’ll go get it.”

Two or three times a day. It never ceases to amaze me the important things some people keep in their car.

My car is a total mess. That’s my fault and possibly not a bad topic for complaint on it’s own. I have old coffee cups, food wrappers and gym clothes in my car. I also have golf clubs, tools and a few maps in there too. But I damn sure don’t have any vital records in my car.

You might be saying to yourself, “maybe the people just put the stuff in their car because they thought you would need it and then they ran out to get it.” Nope.

I know they didn’t do that for several reasons, the first of which is that would require some type of planning and foresight on their part. Most of these people are incapable of such things. That’s why a lot of them find themselves in the situations they are in that I ultimately have to help them out of.

I also know they had the stuff in their car just because they keep it there because when they bring in the pay stubs or bank statements, they are usually raveled up and coffee stained just like they would be if I left them in MY messy car.
