My husband converted our home computer to Linux about a year ago. I’m not a geek by any stretch of the imagination but “Ubuntu” is more than just fun to say.
We started using Skype a few months ago and everything works great except video will not work with Skype on Linux. Chat programs we used before did have video capability but Skype does not, so obviously my biggest complaint about Skype on Linux is that you can’t use video.
As my husband explained to me the concept of “open source software” vs. “closed source software” and why Skype video would not work right now with Linux, I started to nod off. I woke up somewhere close to the end and heard him say something like, “So, you see? It’s all Skype’s fault that the kids can’t see Nanny.”
OK, Skype. My kids can’t see Nanny and it’s all your fault.

nopatience,
We feel for you, but you really should invest in a macbook pro. Despite the problem that notquiteleet had with his defective repair, it really is a phenomenal machine. It has an iSight camera built in, and Skype works (mostly) well for videoconferencing right out of the box.
No, it’s not Skype’s fault at all. You really should get a macBook. But the problem is nothing really works on Linux, it’s a great operating system. Skype would have to invest A TON of money into developping it for Linux, but they wouldn’t get alot of money because Linux doen’t have as much of a market share. Oh, and No offence but I was as little shocked about what your husband said (i don’t mean it in a mean way).
When you pay for an Operating System, you get more benefits.

It’s been a year since that last comment, and Skype 2.0 for Linux has been out for some time now. It has full video support. If you haven’t already, download the latest version and start seeing Nanny.
As to the other comments…. Bah! I have a MacBook, a Windows machine and an Ubuntu machine sitting on my desk at work. While most of my work requires Windows because of software restrictions, the Mac is not much different in that regard than Ubuntu is. It’s a “cute” machine, but it’s overpriced and has hardly anything over Linux. I end up using the Ubuntu machine much more often than the Mac, partly because the Mac’s keyboard is horrible.
