My Biggest Complaint About Size 2 Mannequins in Clothing Stores

I really hate that when you go the store to buy clothes, they only have these tiny waisted mannequins. They are not realistic for every woman, and I hate trying to find something that looks so good on the mannequins…only to try it on a look like blimpie the sub. i am 135ish and 5′3..i am well with in my BMI and dont look bad at all…but I am not a size 2 anymore! Dont I deserve to look as good as the size 2’s? How can i do that when I dont have a realistic expectation of what this clothing will look like on a fuller body? Most mannequines dont have large or even moderatley medium size bosoms either…
Alot of companys sinch up the back of the shirts on the mannequins to give it a tighter appearance….which fraudently displays the way the shirt is created to fit and be worn. Stupid mannequins that are made in the model of only one type of woman!

  1. I usually think advertisers try to find their “target” group. But in the case of clothes that theory certainly doesn’t hold true. I see very few size 2 or 4 or even 6 women where I live. Mostly they are 14+ but the clothes are modeled on size two mannequins. You are so right.

  2. i can agree with what your saying. a bit. but honestly, if you know that these manequins are undersized, and you are averagesized and you are trying on clothes that look good on the undersized manequins, and they don’t look too great on you…just what is it your complaining about? if your aware of this? i’ve found that mostly ALL clothes look much better on the manequins than on an actual person. that is why they have them that size. to make the clothes look more appealing. i know i wouldn’t be too turned on by a display of size 14+ manequins. what can you do about it? nothing realy.

  3. I work in a large retail store. This is a ridiculous complaint. The mannequins are small because the solid ones are rather heavy. The store is there to sell clothes to you the consumer. The mannequin is not there to harass you about your size or weight. It is a replica of how an outfit will look when placed together with appropriate accessories and such. I am a small size, and the mannequins are even smaller than I am– for logic sake. That is why the clothes have to be clamped at the back. Otherwise they would look unappealing to a customer. You should look around, try things on, and find out what works with ‘your’ body type. The mannequins are there to help, not hurt.

  4. How about the length of pants and jeans. They must think all Americans are taller that 6 foot.

  5. What is up with the tops you see in stores lately. They are so thin you can see through them. A person would think we would have to have them see-thru b/c we live in Africa. Have you ever seen a women pick up a top and hold it up to the light on the ceiling? I sure in the heck am not going to buy three and layer it just so I am not sticking out or nipping out. Guess, I will have to go dig deep into the closet for something that is going to cover and not show thru or I guess I could make my own.

  6. Eh and amber are correct woth their comments. The mannequins are there to sell. They are not there to make anyone feel bad. Ex. Womens shoes are often displayed at size 5 or 6 but most women would agree that size 5 or 6 is far from average. It sells. That’s why its there.

  7. I am 5′4″ and 128 pound but have no hips and butt (like the mannequins) and fit into a size 0 or 2 and a 4 sometimes in dresses. I understand where your coming from because I lost 60 pounds and was in a size 12-14 before. However, I had to steal the dress off the mannequin in the window the other day, because there were none on the racks in my size. So there are people out there that fit into these sizes. I had a hard time finding my size when I was larger, and now I have a hard time finding 0’s or 2’s. Also, yes I agree with the person above about the average length of pants. Petites are too short on me and regulars are too long. I always have to have things hemmed which drives me nuts! I thought the average height of a woman was 5′4″ which is what I am.
