My Biggest Complaint About Pop-Up Ads On CNN’s Website

CNN is still using pop-up ads on their website. Actually, they’re pop-under ads.

Pop-ups and pop-unders disappeared from legitimate sites years ago. Pop-up blockers and the spread of Firefox as a browser have made the pop-up and pop-under virtually worthless as far as advertising is concerned.

So why is CNN still using the annoying little worthless bastards? Does CNN really generate a substantial sum of cash from these things? Do pop-unders put a dent in Anderson Cooper’s salary?

CNN has just undergone a very nice site revision. Everything is cleaner and easier to read. Now finish it off and dump the pop-unders, CNN.

  1. Hear, hear!! The pop-unders are so very annoying. They do nothing but lower my opinion of the site and make me less likely to return. (Not to mention that I will never click on the ad.)

  2. My Firefox browser does not even block the annoying Netflix and Orbitz pop-unders on CNN. Thank you for pointing this out!

  3. I agree, cnn went from a trusted news source to a site that has more lame pop up ads then a porn site. I used to go to cnn.com everyday, now its a once a month occasian because of those annoying ads

  4. Very funny comment on a site where they load up huge ads between the title and the content of the article. Oh the irony…

  5. That is SLEAZZZZZZY CNN…Is your Website a AOL revisited Parasite?

These same POP ups are what made people REVOLT to AOL’s Browser!! IS your Marketing & AD Department that STUPID ? REALLY?

Don’t they have any HISTORY for what a BRowser that most people have gravitated too.. Like Firefox or Opera.. because it is Less Invasive and gives the user control over the ads.

Anderson Cooper 360 Website isn’t like this ! Neither is Larry Kings Live

So why is the Main CNN website Trashy like this? You don’t see Yahoo or Ebay or Google Trashing their Main component.
Perhaps people on an organized level Need to constantly contact Anderson 360 to let them know how DISSAPOINTED we are with the POP UP ADS ON CNN’s MAIN WEBSITE.. PERHAPS we should CONTACT LKL too..

Something has to be done.. this is ridiculous.

  6. DISCONNECT ADOBE FALSH from your computer & FIRE Fox will Block the POP UP’s unders & the res6t of the BS..

I don’t watch anymore of CNN’ video’s because they want to force me to install Adobe Flash Version 10.. they know that Adobe Flash version 9 Blocks their Ads too. .plus version 9 lets you cut off the automatic updating.

Not playing the ADVERTISEMENT companies game..leave them in the background. JMHO

  7. I just went to MSN.COM for the first time in a couple years. The content is the exact same and there were no pop up junk boxes that I find myself right clicking and deleting. Honestly, I cannot remember ever looking at any of them. Just more steps to read the news. Not worth it since the quality has gone so far down hill over the last few years.

  8. This is so true. I searched for “annoying cnn.com pop up” on Google today and found this being discussed in many places. I had been annoyed by CNN’s home page for several months. It is just unbelievable that a website like CNN.com would have these pop ups and pop unders. It makes an otherwise very good, reputable site look ugly. I will never click on those pop up ads and never sign up for Netflix or Orbitz. There are so many other nice websites that are clean from pop ups and pop unders - like MSN.com, Wikipedia.org, etc., etc. I don’t mind the banner ads or the side ads at all. It is just the pop ups and unders that annoys the hell out of me. CNN needs to learn!!!

  9. Now because of these ads - I HATE aflac!! and CNN!!!!

  10. I have had it with CNN’s pop-under ads and will no longer use their web site for my news source. I did have it as my home page but no more. CNN, lose the ads!
