Dave Nutter, a political candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates, is running commercials where he is standing there with some business guy who apparently is in the broadband internet business. He makes claims that sound like he is working hard so people like his buddy in the commercial can get contracts to bring high-speed internet to southwest Virginia. Then Dave Nutter claims that broadband internet will bring southwest Virginia more jobs. Nutter apparently wants to do this with grants and external incentives and whatever else it will take (I doubt he will be suggesting using tax revenue during this campaign, though).
Seriously Dave, with all the issues that face the people of southwest Virginia, you’re platform is to convince voters that they really need broadband internet and this will somehow trickle down into more jobs?
I’m not denying that it would be nice for people in southwest Virginia to have broadband internet and somebody might get a job or two out of it. My biggest complaint is that politicians, like Dave Nutter, probably have real plans in place to try to help the people they represent with real issues. But what these politicians feature in their commercials is, “vote for me and you’ll get high speed internet in your town.” This reminds me of politicians who run on “abolishing your taxes,” when what people need is real solutions to problems like jobs, poverty, and health care (not some spare change in their pockets) These politicians don’t talk about what people need, they pander themselves to things they know they want.
