My company has started printing little propaganda slogans and messages on my paycheck stubs.
The paycheck I just opened warned me that October is fire awareness month and I really need to plan my escape route from my house. This got me thinking like a good Jedi mind trick, “yes, I do need to plan my escape route from house.”
Just like that, I’m totally distracted from the mere pittance I am paid for the work that I do. Looking at a cute drawing of a burning house takes my attention away from the massive amount of tax being deducted… huh, what? Stop, drop and roll? Yes, I haven’t practiced that since pre-school and I need to make sure I remember how to do it.
My biggest complaint about the paycheck messages is that they work. I heard at least 3 other people talking about fire safety this morning instead of bitching about how little we are paid. I’m pretty sure this is the way you get your paycheck when you are in a cult, too.

As my daughter told me last night, it is Stop, drop, cover your face, and roll.
I don’t really look at those messages, they don’t seem to work here, because we have put messages in that say things like, “make sure your address is correct so we issue the correct W-2″
Very few changes, but several errors…so those that actually look probably updated their address when they moved anyway. Those that don’t look wonder why their employer needs their address anyway.
That’s almost as bad as bathroom stall advertisements. Do I need to move to a deserted island to get some peace?
