Did you know you can pay to upgrade a jail stay in California? Seriously. If you are sentenced to active jail time in California, as Paris Hilton has been, you can pay somewhere between $75.00 to $127.00 a day to be removed from the regular jail population and enjoy a nice quiet stay in something that looks better than my college dorm.
Drunk driving, suspended license . . . it doesn’t matter. Got cash? Relax in style at the self-pay prisons of California. Some “clients” (they don’t call them “inmates”) are even able to bring iPods or laptops with them.
My biggest complaint about self-pay jails is pretty damn obvious. What if I don’t have $80.00 bucks to upgrade? What if I’m poor or mentally ill?
Why should any state treat any convicted criminal differently because of the economic status of the criminal?
