My Biggest Complaint About Overtightened Computer Peripheral Cables

Besides everything else that I hate about fixing your computer…

My biggest complaint about overtightened computer peripheral cables is that I have to be the one to loosen them - for minutes at a time! Stop it.

Do you really need to tighten the screws on the video cables into the back of your computer in the first place? I don’t and my monitor hasn’t flown out of the room yet.

Computer peripheral cables are not safety devices or theft deterrents.

Are you planning on using the cable attached to the computer to rappel down the side of the building in case of a fire? Are you thinking someone might run by your desk and grab one of the components and run off with it only to find it has been extremely overtightened by you thus anchoring the entire monitor to your PC?

Just put the cable in the slot and forget about it. If you really feel like you need to tighten it, just make one or two turns so I’m not wasting my lunch changing a monitor for you.

  1. agreed completely… that pisses me off too

  2. This totally chaps my @$$, especially where I work, a non-climate controlled environment. Here when someone screws in a monitor cable, give it a few weeks in the heat, and it’s practically welded to the case.

  3. You, as a computer “fixer” are a moron. Any IT tech knows that tightening the cable improves the quality of the video/sound/whatever feed.
