My Biggest Complaint About Online Lists Spread Across Multiple Pages

On my homepage, there are often articles that center around some sort of list. “10 Things to Eat Every Day.” “7 Things Not to Do at Work.” Great. But WHY does each “item” have it’s own page? Why do I have to click the “Next” hyperlink? I’m on a T1, but on every other page an ad server chokes and causes a web surfing wipeout! Are such layouts ploys to get more traffic to ads?

Despicable.

  1. It’s all about the money.

I always look for “Print” options, that, when available, provide everything on one page with less graphics.

  2. This is a two fold tactic, for many it multiple pages will bring search engine listings up in the rankings for the page, letting you find these disturbing pages to begin with!. Secondly and probably most likely in this case as JGilly said its all about the money. People get paid in two different ways with these pop up adds or ad servers one by each time the add is displayed or in other cases each time the add creates a click. HMM this brings up a good anti-ad campaign. We create a bot which seeks out these sites and continuosly clicks the adds. This does two things bumps the web traffic for the site increasing its cost to the owner and drains the advertisers budget with bogus clickthrus. We must fight these things on their own level.
