My Biggest Complaint About Norton Antivirus Auto Renewal Scam

Norton products are terrible, in my opinion. For one, they don’t offer protection that you pay for, especially with Norton 360 2.0. Don’t expect this product to sustain your computer for more than two weeks. Sooner or later, you’ll notice that some of its functions have been deactivated, and even on an administrative account, you cannot reactive those settings. This, in my opinion, is nothing more than Norton employees compromising your computer purposely, to get you to purchase remote access service and assistance….oh, at about a cost of $53.00 on up. What a bunch of hog wash!

And to make things worse, canceling the automatic renewal is impossible. Once your computer has been infected, all of your archived emails get wiped out. This email contains the “Confirmation number” which apparently is required to cancel the automated renewal….on top of the registration code, the serial number, and the product key!

Your only solution is to cancel your credit card, and apply for a new account number.

Screw Norton! I’ll never waste my money on them again. They got me twice, and I promise it’ll never happen again!

Joseph

P.S. Yes, I’m pissed as hell at them!

  1. You deserved to get fleeced, all anti virus ’solutions’ are a scam and a huge waste on system resources and money, in terms of security I suggest a hardware firewall (usually included into routers) and to simply not be an idiot, you’ve failed the latter requirement already but as a pointer download from trusted sources (warez or not) and use firefox /w noscript/ adblock plus for browsing.

  2. Norton (Symantec) is why I use AVG. It’s the best switch I ever made, now going on 4 years. Works so much better, and it’s free.

  3. Norton Anti Virus withdrew almost $50.00 from my bank account without my permission! This has resulted in a $33.00 overdraft! I would never give anyone permission to deduct money from my account without talking to me first. Their customer service Reps have been rude to me. One guy hung up in my face. I promise, I will sue these people!

  4. Bill,
I understand your frustration. I am preparing a class action suit against Symantec, Norton’s parent company for their auto renewal policies. Go to my firm site an contact me if you want to join. treulaw.com

  5. Norton renewed my antivirus without my permission after I had bought a Mac computer which does not require it. This is a really crumby way to do business My credit crd company tried to fight it, but did not have any success. Evidently this is the way they make their money. What a bunch of crooks!

  6. Hi

I am a UK resident and have just fallen foul of this auto renewal thing, which in my view is very sharp practice indeed. I spent ages trying to get hold of the customer ’support’ only to find that I could do nothing without the product key- which I no longer have, as I thought I had cancelled this acccount two years ago. I was lucky enough to find a chat site which suggested using Norton’s ‘chat’ with an operative feature. I had an email chat with someone at Norton who read the relevant information as I sent it and has promised me a refund of the £69 !!!!! taken from my credit card last week. This person was very polite and correct and also promised me that the subscription was now definately cancelled.

I will come back to ths site and let you know if the money reaches my account. Hopefully this will be the end of the matter for me … I noted a report on google which said the US attorney general had criticised both McAffee and Symantec for their business practices, so maybe my experience is a sign of some improvement.

Good luck to all - I shall certainly be a lot more careful what I agree to in the future.

  7. When i installed this it suddenly brought up 4 Trojans through Windows Defender

  8. I just installed norton 360, restarted my computer, and now have a new virus which wont allow me to open any shortcut or program on my pc without an “open with” program popping up bringing me to internet explorer. stupid of me to renew when 23 minutes after it gets canceled i coincidentally get a malware infection. never had a problem on my other pc that didnt have norton. ive been up for hours im sorry if my sentences are poorly structured..

  9. I purchased a Norton 360 3.0 disk at Staples in December of 09 and installed it on Dec. 18, 09. This should give me a year, (12/18/10) but they are already sending me messages my subscription is up in August, 23 days from now. I went to their chat session and all I could get them to confirm is that I had a year, but would not say a year from when or confirm that I had until 12/18. My norton screen still says I have only 23 days left. If they cancel my subscription in August, I am going to write letters to everyone, including the Attorney General’s office.

  10. I had 5 days to renew my subscription, so I purchased the product key that you are to use when you renew. Then the information at the bottom of the Norton Gui said I had 366 days till I needed to renew. What happened to the 5 days left? I should of showed 370 days left.

  11. I installed Norton antivirus software in 2006, and after almost a year of experiencing all kinds of problems with the product I switched to AVG free antivirus product on the advice of a professional, and after spending hours on the phone with Norton tech support and finally having them cancel my subscription.

A couple of weeks ago (years later) I found out I’ve been paying to auto-renew on my credit card every year. I contacted them and they refunded the most recent charge but said the prior years were too distant to qualify for a refund, even though the fees in those years were also 100 percent unjustified. I’m looking into signing up for the class action I read about in the comments above, and meanwhile I will share my frustration online in every way that I can, in the hope of discouraging others from being conned like I was. If we all make enough noise maybe HP and some other companies will stop preloading Norton on their systems. True, the same reprobates that run the company will absorb the loss of revenue by cutting employees, but what other option do we have? Norton/Symantec: Terrible products, reprehensible way of doing business.

  12. Please e-mail or call the attorneys at Treuhaft and Zakarin LLP at nhart@treulaw.com or (212) 897-5865. We want to fight against this and we need details. Thank you.

  13. If Norton charges you without your permission tell you bank (for atm cards) or charge card company. They will remove the charge. Thats what I did when Norton charged me. Norton also charged me three times in one year at $100 a pop to fix viruses that NAV is supposed to prevent. They are a rip off. I now use Avast, Spybot and Malware bytes. All are FREE, all make my computer run faster. All do a perfect job protecting my computer. Norton is a money pit, dont buy into it
