I have had my Macbook for 5 1/2 months. My first issue was the battery. In the upper right hand corner where it says how much battery life is left, it says there is no batteries available.
A week later I made myself an appointment to get it fixed and somewhere between me making the appointment and packing it into my case a crack appeared in the lower right corner of the screen. I took the computer in anyway to get prices on how much each would cost to fix.
They gave me a new battery no questions asked, but the screen would cost at least $600 to fix. I took the computer home and it has been 24 hours and the battery is still unavailable..meaning everytime my charger comes out my computer shuts itself off. I am still very upset and don’t know what to do about the screen, since i could just buy a new laptop for that price, but the fact that the battery isn’t even fixed is bothering me more and more.

Do yourself a favour, sell your Mac and buy a PC.
I am in the same predicament, my screen shattered when I shut it, and it is going to cost me $900 to get it fixed. I think I would rather spend the money on a PC.
This is after the same problem with the battery, which blew up and wrecked my mouse, and after the CD insert fell within the computor. These things were both covered by warranty, but both things took numerable services to actually fix.
To own a Mac is to be part of a Religon, I like to think independantly.

Apparently you like to think “independently” of proper English spelling guidelines.
There are less expensive options for replacing a Mac’s screen. Find a reputable third-party repair company to fix it for less than what Apple charges.
LCDs do not spontaneously crack. Despite what you may think, they don’t just “break” without external force. 5 minutes of online searching will save you a lot of money. If only that’s what people were interested in rather than handouts.

Excuse me?? I have owned several laptops and NEVER have had any issues with them. I am a teacher and deal with at least 15 laptops at day, not one has been broken in the past 6 years. I currently own a Macbook and I went away, left my Mac in a safe location and when i returned I found a crack in the corner, which COMPLETELY distorted my screen. Now, it is not my responsibility to replace my screen with a screen that is not Mac approved. I’m sorry if you find this hard to believe, however the 50 or so blogs that i have read can back my case up. Apple need to get with it, and just like their battery fault, admit that this is a manufacturer default.

This is the same EXACT problem…first the battery, then when I entered the room and opened the macbook, the screen is shattered, can this be explained???? WILL APPLE PAY FOR THIS???
Jane on May 15th, 2008 at 8:06 pm | Link
The two problems are about as related as stubbing your toe and having your eyeball fall out.
And LCDs spontaneously crack about as often as eyeballs jump out of sockets.

the same thing happend to me and my screen. My laptop still works but the crack is getting worse. They don’t make my copy of a mac anymore so i caned get it fixed. I Hope apple fixed this problem in the new laptops.

Sorry for what you people say, but Brian is right. LCD screens do not just crack, nor do batteries explode

You’re right, LCD don’t crack, but what if the screen already hit by external force before it deliver to us?

The Apple Mac Book was reconmended to me by an Apple user, however I had only had it for two months and the screen creacked! I can count the amount of times I had used it, as I only brought it to be able to call my Sister, As it was still under warrenty I rang Apple, who told me “This is a first”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!? I expected so much more from Apple, admit to MANUFACTURE”S FAULT and CALL BACK the Mac Book, it will do your reputation GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gailie on March 20th, 2009 at 2:12 pm | Link
My screen creacked while my Mac was sitting on the table, it was two months old and used eight times. Apple should call back the Mac Book under MANUFACTURE’S FAULT and keep face with loyal customers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no wonder SCREENS are not under warrant,,,,,,,,,,,. were left holding the broken baby. SORT IT OUT APPLE

I’ll reiterate my previous comments. Most laptops are very durable and require significant force to crack the LCD panel. MacBook computers are especially durable, and I’ve seen them take 5 foot falls without cracking the display. Sure, there is damage to the outside of the case, but I’ve never seen an LCD spontaneously crack. Something has to cause it, and it’s probably not a “defect” as so many people would like to believe.

i like how the first guy said “I like to think independently”, when the Apple slogan is “Think Different”. Good for you! Your so independent and different from the other 90% of people who use a windows laptop.
I have dropped my macbook countless times and never once broken my screen. I ****ed up my dvd drive but nothing is wrong with the screen.

My macbook screen cracked, too. It has been dropped a couple of times, but nothing major. I also have a PC laptop that has been through much more and it has no damage. I have read many, many complaints about the MacBook screens being very delicate. As much as I love my MacBook, I am really disappointed witht the quality of the shell and screen. To fix this, I have found it will be approximately $800 or more. If these MacBooks are going to have these problems, they really should be able to fix these for much less. I am having to decide between fixing it and paying that ridiculous amount, trying to fix it myself with on line tutorials and a screen purchased from e-bay or just buying a new Mac. If so many people are having these problems, why aren’t they being addressed by Mac?

After dropping my baby daughter a couple of times, nothing major, she has a bunch of medical problems and learning disabilities. I also have a son who was dropped WAY more often and he has no problems at all. As much as I love my daughter, I’m really disappointed with the quality of the female gender’s infant state. To fix this, I’ve found it will be thousands of dollars per month for medical care and supervision. If these babies are going to have these problems, they really should be able to be disposed of more easily. I am having to decide between putting up with her issues, spending that ridiculous amount of money on medical care, trying to fix her myself with tutorials from WebMD and Wikipedia, and putting her in a trash can and trying for another boy. If so many people are having these problems, why aren’t they being addressed by God?

Drunkentech… that post is the funniest thing I’ve ever read
I came across this site because my daughter dropped my macbook over 5 feet from her loft bed. While it sustained some major pixel damage and I will have to replace the LCD, I’m actually starting to feel that I lucked out as far as what could have happened. The fact that there is no visible damage other than LCD pixel issues leaves me with a positive impression of the macbook durability. 5 Feet! For me, a quick back-up and then mailing to a thrid party repair company is worth a couple hundred bucks when I compare the benefits of having my mac over the frustration of when I had a PC. My previous laptop was actually in grave danger of LCD/damage issues since it took every bit of personal restraint I could muster not to throw the piece of junk over my balcony into the dumpster.

I got a macbook yesterday and love it. I had a sony vaio which had a 30min battery life, flimsy keys, bad quality screen, and rubbish speakers. Reading this, is there anything I can do to prevent my screen from cracking?
Georgie on June 14th, 2009 at 12:57 am | Link
Reading this and a few other sites on the same topic - could the “non-external force” cracks be a result of extreme temp changes?
Presumably the screen and the casing expand and contract at different rates, and perhaps that could cause pressure on the screen, and hence cracks. My girl friend’s macbook cracked yesterday, with no obvious external forces, it’s Summer here in Shanghai and so high thirties centigrade outside and too cool air conditioned inside (often as low as 18).
A few other posts referred to breaks appearing whilst on holiday in Egypt - so assuming a similar thing there… Not a hypotheses I’m able to test, but maybe a not too far flung explanation.

this blog is stupid. screens do not just break. i have used mac books and apple computers my entire life. i have dropped them countless times and also have pets that are hard on my computer. yet the only time i suffered from a cracked screen is when my boyfriend plopped down on my couch with my open macbook behind it. the apple store gave you a battery for free- no questions asked. go find an apple specialist (tech serve is one that is cheaper), get your screen fixed, and stop bitching. take better care of it. if you “went away” and the screen cracked (by no fault to you of course), then maybe you should put your computer in a safer spot when you leave it unattended next time. screens are fragile…its the most expensive piece of equipment involved in a laptop. just be thankful that it wasn’t your hard drive that “spontaneously” stopped working.

i have been working on computers for four years now, and the issue with the screen cracking on the macbooks is that the battery overheats and causes a stress on the screen, the reason why regular laptops don’t have this issue, is because they have more space to “breath” meaning more holes, for air to cool the battery, if you have the issue of your battery not being recognized, even if you can take your cord out and it still be on, remove your battery asap, even if it is a mac or a pc, it will overheat first causing your screen to have have a dim area, the one i am on has that issue right now, but anyways, the it will eventually crack it, i have had no other complaints other than that with my macbook, i am actually looking for a cheap screen replacement site at the moment, i am repairing an a1278 for a friend, need a screen for cheap, like less than 200 bucks, oem or not idk, 13.3 glossy i believe, havent recieved it quite yet,
Thanks all,
Blake

I’ve had machines where the battery has swollen so thick (2+inches) that the machine cannot sit level and the trackpad stops working. The swollen battery is an obvious failure that would not go undetected except in the slightest, smallest cases. In which case:
Swollen batteries do not cause screen spotting or cracks unless you have anger management problems and throw the battery at the screen. If you knowingly KEEP the battery, swollen to the size of a southern biscuit, inside your computer, you are a fool. That’s like not going to the hospital if you find blood coming from your eyes.
Short story: keep an eye on your computer and don’t beat it up. NOT DIFFICULT

look… everybody that keeps saying ” i drop mine all the time and it doesn’t break. Screens don’t just break.” Just because yours has not broken yet does not mean it doesn’t break. Your mac is not being used and in the same conditions as everyone else. my screen broke but not from force because i use it all day everyday and i always take care of it the best i can and have never dropped it or set anything on it. I was just using it one day and noticed a hairline crak that over a few days began to warp the area around the crack. not too long after that the edges started to warp where there is no crack at all and the entire edge is blacked out all the way around. i think georgie may be rite about the climate idea because it got pretty hot here in texas and that is when the edges went black. so dont say screens dont just break or mess up on there own if ur not an expert on computer screens.
james on March 15th, 2010 at 12:52 am | Link
Maybe Apple shouldn’t sell laptops to anyone in Texas, nor sell them to anyone who use the words “rite” or “ur” in a technical discussion.

ok so it’s been a few years since I posted this comment, but I just read everyones response. since then I have witnessed 4 friends and family members crack their computer screens. my sister dropped a magnet near her MacBook and the magnet hit the screen and caused a huge black hole Which eventually turned into an entire black screen. two others sat on/stepped on their pc laptops, and my father dropped his off of his recliner while sleeping with it on him. in all instances, something was causing the screens to crack. I still to this day don’t understand how my screen cracked in transition from my apartment to the apple store, and I will probably not buy a laptop from apple until the problem is adressed and/or fixed. I have an iPhone now, and after watching a professor’s screen crack on his iPhone midclass while it was in his pocket, I took extraordinary and wxpensive measures to protect mine with an otterbox. too bad they don’t make those for MacBooks. my new pc has not had a single problem in 2 years, and when I brought my MacBook overseas, since it’s already shot, the screen cracked even more. very nice.
