My Biggest Complaint About My Bent MacBook Pro - Apple Confirms All MacBook Pros Are Bent

Video from Crabtree Valley Mall Store. Apple employee 2 confirms all Pro’s are bent. Apple employee 1 just confirms he will fight me. See my original complaint detailing my efforts to have the bent MacBook Pro fixed here.

Editor’s Note: This complaint has been resolved. The original poster has been issued a new MacBook Pro and has followed up this complaint on his own blog. Please do not hesitate to post your own complaints about customer service or defective products. The resolution of this complaint is proof enough that the squeaky wheel really does get the grease here at My Biggest Complaint.

1. Can I ask why you are harping on this so much?
You seem to be very up set over this.

2. Ok Nabeel, you give me 4100.00 + Applecare for my laptop and we will call it even.

Deal?

3. If you paid 4100 for your MBP you were ripped off.

4. From this guys web sites and reading the comments it seems like he bought the MBP, then paid 1400 bucks for the screen to be repaired. I think thats how he arrived at 4100 bucks which sounds about right.

5. Oh well. Everyone won’t have the best experience with Apple.

6. What’s the deal with the Apple employee that wants to fight being a lawyer? Is he working at the Apple Store for some extra cash or is he just totally geeked out and loving every minute of the Apple Store limelight?

7. I don’t know if the bend is a design feature or a defect, but it does seem odd that any Apple employee would ever use the words “throw down” when discussing an issue with a customer. It sure is an interesting twist on “Apple Care.” Where is this guy’s supervisor?

8. Don’t forget, this is a repair. The manager in the video is trying to pass off a crappy repair as part of the design.

Imagine your car t-boned. You take it to the repair shop and they fix it. The door doesn’t shut quite right. This happens all the time in the real non-Apple Store world.

You take your car back and tell them about it. They fix it again and it’s still not right. In fact, you take it back three times and every time, the door still doesn’t shut right. It shuts and water probably won’t get in the car, but it just doesn’t look right.

The manager then points to every other car on the lot and tells you, “All of them look like this. Everyone of these has a bent door on it. It’s within technical specs and you’ll never find one that’s not bent.”

9. Perhaps you should stop going to the Apple store and take it up with Corporate Headquarters. The corporation doesn’t get to deal with customers the same way store clerks do and therefore still follow the customer service techniques more closely. They will not be happy until you get the product you expect, where as store clerks are paid hourly and certainly not well enough to give a god damn about your frickin Macbook. That Apple store is a retailer, somebody got Apple’s permission to put an Apple store there and received a handbook and guidelines to follow in order to keep Apple’s permission to run the store. His primary goal is profit, his loyalty to Apple is secondary.

My dad had an issue with the local Nissan dealer who sold him a car and didn’t include the user manual for the GPS nav system. My dad kindly asked for the manual which should’ve been included at no extra cost, the saleperson just brushed him off and never got him the manual. He even refused to return my father’s phonecalls after a while. My father bought his own manual and wrote a formal complaint to Nissan Corporate. Corporate calls him at home, covers the cost of the manual, formally apologizes and also gets on the retailers ass to reprimand them for such ridiculously crummy customer service.

Corporate gets things done and they know a satisfied customer is a repeat customer. Your retailer doesn’t know this and he hires part-time employees, snot-nosed highschoolers, and other people who haven’t learned this yet.

10. My biggest complaint about this is that I don’t live in Raleigh anymore so I can’t go into the Raleigh Apple Store and plaster this video on every one of those beautiful huge mac monitors on display. I hope everyone down there goes in that store and pulls this video up every time they go in the store.

11. Ok everyone if you could help out the cause and post my blog entry/complaint on your own blogs and spread the word, submit it to digg, slashdot, and the consumerist, that would help me out tremendously!

Ive filed a formal complaint with Apple and was given a case number to follow up with. I called the other day and they said there is nothign to follow up with. Its a complaint and once its filed its done.

I havent received an apology from Apple, a copy of the complaint, nor any compensation of any form for this atrocious display of customer service or repair work. I just want a full refund of the repair, or a new laptop.

12. (admin note: rather than remove this post as inappropriate, this post was edited for language).

I’ve had Apple products for over 2 years of my life. I have all the .mac, Apple care, all of it. You are one of the biggest ***** I have ever come across. You can state your complaint, you clearly have that right, but to video someone without their permission and then post it online after making some editing to it, that is outstanding to me. I hope that you get sued to where you don’t have a dime to your name to even look at an Apple product again! If you want your MBP to be in perfect condition, treat it with some respect and don’t drop it, so you would have to get a new display put on it! You were only trying to start a fight in there when they are only doing their jobs and sadly dealing with **** like you that come in there just to bitch when they have nothing better to do.

13. Roxy how do you know he would have received the same service if they knew he was recording them? Isnt that the point of hidden cameras and investigative reports? To prove otherwise what people like you turn a blind eye and ear to? This guy cannot be sued at all. This all falls under his first amendment rights. Oh and not to be obvious but the Apple Store in that Mall is full of cameras, so the employees know they are being recorded by Mall AND Apple security in the first place. Having someone else record them with a cell phone makes no difference as circumstances in the environment have not changed. Clearly you are one of those Apple fans that thinks everything negative to Apple is photoshopped or fake. Clearly you must think there is never a problem with any apple product *cough*class action lawsuit against apple for an ipod battery *cough*. But thanks for the bait, that was MMMmmm MMMmmm good.

14. Filming someone when you are one of the parties involved in the conversation is legal. However, defamation (i.e. posting the video claiming that a person is a LIAR) is actionable according to common law.

The common law origins of defamation lie in the torts of slander (harmful statement in a transitory form, especially speech) and libel (harmful statement in a fixed medium, especially writing but also a picture, sign, or ***electronic broadcast***), each of which gives a common law right of action.

So, Roxy, I agree with your post. And MacGuy, just because someone likes a particular brand does not make their opinion any less valid… obviously this guy (who is too cowardly to post HIS name) loves Apple products, but just doesn’t want to own up to the fact that he broke his machine and is unable to accept the fact that it will not ever be “brand new” again.

When you total your car and get it fixed, they do the best they can, and most of the time the insurance company will fix the damage, but your Chevy Celebrity’s door may not perfectly line up the way it used to before your collision, that doesn’t give you the right to go to the Chevy dealer or body shop and berate the employees because of your accidental damage.

The fact that he used to work for Apple is against him because he should already know this. This guy should drop this because already in a very actionable position at this point. But alas, the only reason this has gone as far as this video, is because this person has is not presenting the whole story.

15. Samantha,

There are a lot of inaccuracies and assumptions in your post.

First of all this video is edited, but only the dead time of me walking around the store is cut out, and subtitles of speech added. There is nothing misrepresented in this video or article. Everything posted is truthful, and if Apple has ambition of suing me I welcome them to do so. However, I would advise the repercussions of a counter suit combined with my unwaivering, and full intent of submitting a voluntary polygraph in regard to their claims. I still have the raw video files from my cell phone, in fact they are posted on YouTube as well here: http://youtube.com/profile?user=notquiteleet.

Second of all I paid to have my laptop fixed as it was not covered under warranty in the first place. What you assume is that Im upset because its not “brand new” again, but you disregard *any* possibility that there is validity in a possible defect in this particular product. You should review the link on macoshints forums. Now if you paid as much attention in reading the article as you did legal details, you would notice the machine *IS* brand new. The entire outside of the laptop was replaced twice, this is what is referred to as the top and bottom assembly. The display was replaced 3 times, the problem is, due to poor quality assembly/maintenance severe bends in the display ensued. It did not effect operation of the laptop other than mechanical latch difficulties that open the notebook. Also the liability of the screen being replaced again is on the consumer, and it costs approximately $1400.00 to do so which in my case was already paid once. However, when a huge part of Apples advertisement and promotion of their product (therefore consumer motivation in purchasing the product) is the elegance and superior design of the machine, they are to be held accountable for said features. Especially held accountable when it looks deformed straight from the repair depot and local retail stores repair shop.

Third, I never accepted the machine the second time it was repaired. Meaning, it was in Apples care the last 2 times it was replaced and couldn’t have damaged or tampered with it. This is the EXACT reason I never accepted the repair the second time after the housings and display were replaced, for simple defense of your baseless accusation and assumption.

Fourth, regardless for what discrepancy is being handled with management, an employee of a company has no place making harassing and threatening comments to *any* customer.

Anyway, the situation has been resolved with Apple and an update post coming soon. Just so you know I received a brand new Macbook Pro, straight out of the box, and its display is *NOT* bent.

16. You’re exactly right. We don’t know all of the facts. And the “baseless accusation and assumption” is due to the fact that you refuse to post all of your information, including your name, documentation, receipts, and ALL interactions with ALL of the different Apple employees you’ve dealt with. It’s not clear if any of the employees threatened you and based on what your video shows, you quoted an interaction with the first employee which was not recorded and the employee responded with a correction to your accusation. This really isn’t worth anymore time. Clearly no one can logically present an argument with you. Doing so leads to your lengthy responses of justification for your self entitlement. Good luck with your Fortune 25 company and your new Macbook Pro that has a display that is *NOT* bent.

17. I agree. This is such a waste since all you clearly want to do is be a victim stuck on your perception of what really happened. Im not sure about anyone else, but when I go into a store at the mall, I dont discuss ‘throw downs’ with the employees! Unless it was instigated by you, I dont see that ever coming up in a conversation. But I am happy that you have a new computer and I hope that you dont break it so there isnt a need for you to go into the Apple store again!

18. Samantha,

While I appreciate your viewpoint, I am not here to argue just to argue. You can believe what you want to believe but its hard to argue with video, especially when the raw unedited files are on YouTube. In the event I needed all of the documentation, it all exists in Apples Global Information System under my name, and the serial number of that laptop. There is always going to be a question of validity or lack thereof from people such as yourself regarding any consumer complaint.

If you or Apple felt I libeled the employee or the company, contact the store and represent the employee and company. Lets go to court and see how wrong I am. Need I remind you that truth is an absolute defense. I have nothing to worry about.

For one who advocates for a logical argument to be presented, I am curious as to why you attempt to relate length of a post to ones credibility. You take a few jabs at me and my credibility even with video evidence and pictorial documentation, only to play the holier than thou persona in hopes I will attack you and reflect on myself negatively. Its a nice attempt at an age old method of baiting people in to arguments.

Thanks, but no thanks.

Roxy,

I dont discuss “throw downs” with people either. I did nothing to preempt his “smack talking” to me which is why I was offended and compelled to catch what I could on video. I was just as confident as you are that something like that would never be encountered at a retail store. Obviously I was wrong and just as shocked as you are confident.

For the record it is certainly NOT the typical attitude of an Apple Store employee, but when encountered in any store it needs to be pointed out and brought to Managements attention.

I take very good care of my electronics including computers. Accidents do happen but that is no excuse for dismissing poor manufacturer repair, or not acknowledging possible manufacturer defects.

My update will come soon.

19. Looking forward to your update. I hope it includes the entire story…

20. Oh man, if I were you, I’d have punched that Apple dude right in the face. You should have taken that repair home and set it on fire or something like that guy with the macbook. Sledgehammered the thing and apple sent him a new one. I am gonna go stir up some **** with those crabtree guys.

Thanks for giving me names to look for when I go in there. I’ve had a beef with them since my iMac took a **** after 8 months. AppleCare is a crock! And whats up with these bitches going on about this bull**** with you recording them. Dont they know the f:)king government is watching all of us. And now all the computers have cameras. You were ripped off.

Your the man dog! Got a new machine cause you wouldnt roll over. You should post this **** on digg. I went and got a dell and run ubuntu now because of apples crappy hardware. I should have just made a scene with my iMac and then they woulda given me a new one. You did it the way I should have.

Thanks again for the info, now I know who to talk to.

21. So maybe I am just very gullible, but as I am about to buy a Macbook Pro I must ask…do they actually all do that over time?

22. Justin said:
So maybe I am just very gullible, but as I am about to buy a Macbook Pro I must ask…do they actually all do that over time?
The problem in this particular instance seemed to be with the improper REPAIR. Another poster mentioned that his (or hers) was also bent up slightly on both ends. And I have seen this slightly on mine also.

Basically, it is a fantastic computer, a great OS, and Apple normally has teriffic customer service. If you were going to buy one before you read this, I certainly wouldn’t let this event change your mind. Get your credit card ready. Send me a free ipod, too!

23. Frank the Bunny, do you really have that little time on your hands that you have to go in that store and start crap with people that have nothing to to do with you what-so-ever?! This idiot made a scene! There is nothing wrong with the computer. All MBP’s do that. I have one. Its brand new. Thats how they are b/c of physics. Maybe instead of jumping on the bandwagon and trying to start ‘throw downs’ with people, you should mind your own business and let his experience be HIS experience. Apple as a whole isnt a bad company. They make great products, but every single person isnt going to be happy with it. Its not possible to please everyone. But thats so immature and childish of you to take what this fool says as concrete and make an idiot of yourself as well. Grow up! Thats all I have to say to you!

24. lol, Roxy must be an Apple employee. Im sure she has a degree in “Physics” too. I never tried to start any throw down with the employee, that issue was on him and him alone. If you think I am lying, hire the guy a lawyer and lets go to court. I will be more than willing to take a polygraph and make a fool out of you, and have you pay my legal fees, not to mention easily win my counter suit against you.

But to address the laptop issue, Roxy, how would you explain the peoples comments in this thread: http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=57767

I will look forward to your explanation.

As for others that are looking for answers as to why this happens, it has been suggested its caused by a combination of the aluminum housing, heat, and lack of strength in structural framing of the chassis. In comparison to the titanium used in the G4 powerbooks it be similar to moving from 10K gold to 24K gold. 24K being much more malleable than 10K, thus needing more structural support, imo. Lack of said support would cause bending in the chassis. It would also effect proper latch operation of the machine so search for MBP latch problems as well.

By the way, did anyone see the class action lawsuit filed against Apple for the iPhone battery issue today? Roxy was right though, “Apple as a whole isnt a bad company. They make great products, but every single person isnt going to be happy with it. Its not possible to please everyone.” I suppose thats the purpose of a Class Action lawsuit, LOL

25. Oh and Mr Squeaky hit the nail on the head. The issue in this particular case was with a poor REPAIR, which the manager tries to blame on the design and supposed fact that “all MBPs do this”. In the same token the manager admits that this is a common and prevalent problem, irony…

I love the OS and the hardware, but will not tolerate BS excuses for poor craftsmanship by their techs. Apple as a company isnt as great as you would think. I have an opinion article in the works that will address that too. It should all be posted by the weekend.

26. Samantha, just ignore him, I spent quite a long time explaining to him the physics of why the Aluminum PowerBooks, and MacBook Pros have the curve in the screen, he refuses to listen to reason. Your wasting your time, on someone who does not want to listen…

27. Frank the Bunny is a shining example of why notquitedeleted should not be posting people’s names on the internet. And obviously the person naming all the names but his own must be a lawyer, or at least he must have watched a lot of Law and Order growing up since he keeps talking about taking a polygraph.

Let’s not debate civil action tactics because America is the country that gives everyone permission to sue everyone over anything. And Forums are for people to whine about things that they want other people to validate their whining about. They are, by far, not the end all, be all of proving the existence of any issue perceived or factual.

The reason I even checked the thread on this was to see if this notquiteleet guy has picked up his shiny new laptop and why haven’t I seen a post about how Apple went above and beyond it’s policies to please this guy. He is obviously the equivalent of the sledgehammer macbook guy, only that guy didn’t name names over the god damn internet. He has way more credibility in my book.

And notquitelooney has forgotten the numerous issues with the TiBooks (seeing as I still have one) that include, hinge covers, hinge failure, mainboard video failure, and hard drive chassis cracking from the alloy used for the internal structures. Having your repair done doesn’t give you the right to a NEW machine. If that were the case, then all businesses should just give you a new unit and not hire repair guys.

Coming from a PC repair background myself, I hate it when my male counterparts want to spend hours on the phone with HP to get a replacement computer instead of just telling someone, “look, you dropped your machine, the wifi card pulled out the connector on the mainboard, just get a PCMCIA card.” Most of the time HP tells our shop to tell the customer to send it in for $900 or more. In which case, the customer would be better off going to Sam’s Club or something and buying a new machine.

28. Samantha needs a hug, IMO.

29. snuggle up with me baby =)

30. “You’re exactly right. We don’t know all of the facts. And the “baseless accusation and assumption” is due to the fact that you refuse to post all of your information, including your name, documentation, receipts, and ALL interactions with ALL of the different Apple employees you’ve dealt with.”

And why should he do this? To satisfy your curiosity or to accomplish a refund via yourself? Unless you represent Apple in some form or other, presenting such evidence does nothing but satiate your apparent scepticism.

You can either choose to believe it or not, that is your choice. What, I believe, he is trying to achieve here is to warn people of the lengths some retailers go to avoid their responsibilities as a front-line to Apple.

” This really isn’t worth anymore time. Clearly no one can logically present an argument with you.”

Anyone can present a logical argument, it does not preclude its rejection, however. Your logical argument is?

” Doing so leads to your lengthy responses of justification for your self entitlement.”

Anyone taken to the cleaners by a company to the extent this person has, has a right to feel aggrieved and want compensation. I don’t think it is too much to expect a replacement machine AND an apology from Apple. All it has done is soured their corporate image when they could have admitted the fault and replaced it. Zero grief!

” Good luck with your Fortune 25 company and your new Macbook Pro that has a display that is *NOT* bent.”

The sarcasm just drips from your keyboard.

31. @Samantha

Funny. For someone who is not technically involved in this issue you spent an inordinate amount of time and energy arguing with notquiteleet.

@notquiteleet

Good work man. This maybe an over simplification but the very fact that Apple corporate decided to send you an apology and a new MBP shows you were right and Nabeel, despite of all his rationalization justifying the bend, was very very wrong.

32. I totally agree with you, Apple has a underlying reputation for quality and service. If you PAY for a product or the repair of a product, you should reap “As advertised” results. Asking for the job to be done right is something no one should ever feel wrong in asking. Remember, they take 100% of your money, so they should give 100% of their quality, product or service period!!!

33. Hey guys, the Apple Employee who wanted to “throw down” can be found on myspace.com at http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=13963496

Note, his eloquent verbage:

“without love we are just ****ers”

Male
27 years old
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA
United States

Also, note this more importantly:
Religion: Hindu

Wow, thats classic!

34. I am absolutely appalled that you posted all of the employees information!!! You need to get some damn maturity and its not like you could ‘throw down’ with another employee since you have made such an ass of yourself that you are forbidden in the store again! So that should tell you something right there! You really need to drop this whole thing b/c you are sounding more and more ridiculous! The sad part is about this fiasco is that you were forced to leave the store over 3 months ago. Isn’t it about time that you get over it and get something else to fill your time with!? I think so. Enough said.

P.S. No, I am not an Apple employee! But thanks for smart ass assumption!

35. Roxy,

Please find somewhere else to troll. I understand you like to make outrageous claims to gain attention, but your last comment was by far, at most, prepubescent.

You’re appalled I posted a link to his PUBLIC myspace profile? Perhaps he should learn how to secure his PUBLIC online information? The internet is an OPEN, PUBLIC entity.

I have never been, nor will I ever be, asked to leave, banned, or forced to leave from *ANY* Apple store. I have no idea where you came up with that garbage.

As for assumptions, you have taken the cake in this comment forum.

Done on all counts Mr. squeaky (expect no free iPod for you…but rather for me). I did look into this further and it looks like some do bend slightly at both ends, but nothing like leet experienced. Hopefully even that is fixed with the new lcd screens going into the MBP’s.

37. In the state of TN, anyone can refuse service to a patron, period, end of sentence. I’ve seen it happen many times at restaurants, convenience stores, even the Mal-Wart and Targé. As far as you not being happy about the repairs, you should have just contacted Apple directly regarding this and let them handle it appropriately. You broke it, you deflowered the virgin, you crapped in your own nest, you took a whiz on your own left foot standing at the urinal, and you might as well deal with those facts. End this senseless ranting because it’s gone from a complaint to an outright atrocity.

Unless you read a different article than I, he DID pay for it, it being the laptop to be fixed, and handsomely at that.

What does that have to do with the demeanor and BS excuses of the Apple Store employee and Manager? What does it have to do with the quality of the repair?

Right, nothing.

Redneck logic, LOL

39. I’ve watched your video several times and all I hear is the manager saying “I didn’t say that”. The rest is you quoting what the Apple employee supposedly said. He may well have said those things, but your video proves pretty much nothing. If you have the Apple employee actually making any of those comments it would be better to post that.

Congrats on your new MBP.

I can appreciate your frustration with the repair process, but if you look around at the machines in various stores I think you will find most MBPs DO curve up slightly at the corners when the case is closed. If your original case did not do this I can understand you not being pleased with getting one that did. My Powerbook AL had similar gaps straight out of the box. It bothered me a bit at first, but I soon realized that most (not all) aluminum PBs and MBPs are like that. The cupping does not affect the performance of my machine in any way. It does slightly detract from the “sexy” factor. From a functional standpoint, these new enclosures are crap compared to the Wallstreet cases (17 steps to upgrade the DVD drive vs 3 on the Wallstreet), but this is Apple we are talking about: Sexy matters. However, if you look at the materials and the overall thickness and weight of the machine (or lack thereof), the tolerances of that gap are probably well within reason. My $.02

40. OK - I watched the full videos on Youtube and I have some further impressions. You sure do seem to be spoiling for a fight. You are examining MBPs on display to see how much gap the have. From the video it appears that all three of the units you examine have similar gaps. Also, while I do not hear the Apple employee actually make any fighting comments, I do hear you seem to acknowledge “being rude and cussing” at the manager on a previous occasion. Keep your day job - you legal career is not looking so good.

I wasnt spoiling for a fight at any time during the entire repair process. As for the being rude and cussing on the previous occasion thats all documented on my blog. I called the employee out on BS he was pitching to a customer to buy software he didnt need. In fact he was flat out lying to the customer trying to get him to buy a 100 dollar software package.

The employee was pissed off at me for calling him out, and the next time I returned tot he store, a good month later, the employee came up to me wanting to fight. I didnt have the video rolling at that point because I was only concerned about what other excuses the Manager was going to tell me. I have limited record time on my cell phone, so I cut it off until I could see the manager approaching, then I woudl turn it back on. After the employee threatened me, thats when I cut the video back on, and got him to repeat what he said to me to just to document what was said to me. No employee should ever say anything of that nature to a customer, period.

How the screens appear on display have nothing to do with the condition mine was in after it was repaired, Ruth, the Regional Manager agreed with that. In fact Ruth told me herself that she wouldnt reasonably expect anyone to verify the condition I was seeing against laptops that are beaten day in and day out on display in a retail store.

My concern was getting the laptop normalized to the way it was before the screen was replaced. I didnt care how many times it had to happen, or in what way it happened. I just wanted it fixed, period. Pawning pathetic excuses off like your customers are complete idiots is what infuriated me and brought all this attention to themselves.

Thankfully Ruth and Apple Corporate were able to resolve this issue in a fair and timely fashion. It is disappointing that one would have to go though all of this to get to this result.

My new Santa Rosa MBP does not bend on either corner, so, as another user suggested if couild have been fixed with the new displays.

That is a concern that would beed feedback from other SR MBP owners.

42. To all,

Thank you for your overwhelming support, and even criticism of this issue.

Widespread issues with Apple products would never be addressed, fixed, nor resolved if it weren’t for people like you. In addition it’s also how class action lawsuits get started, but hopefully it will never come to that point.

The issue has been resolved and the update link is located in the editors note in this article.

If anyone else has similar experiences, or similar problems with your MBP continue to post in here and document it. Or you can simply file a complaint on this site.

Personally, I have nothing further to contribute since the issue has been resolved.

Regards,

nql

43. That is very good - I’m glad it was resolved.

You keep saying he repeated a threat on the video. It simply isn’t there. You confuse your experience with what is on the tape. They are obviously not one and the same.

“I wasnt spoiling for a fight at any time during the entire repair process. As for the being rude and cussing on the previous occasion thats all documented on my blog. I called the employee out on BS he was pitching to a customer to buy software he didnt need.”

So you set him straight in front of a customer, apparently using cuss words, for saying gmail had security issues. Good for you. Now look up “gmail security” on the web and find the security problems noted in 10/04, 12/05, 03/06, 01/07 and 07/07. I couldn’t find and web articles on .mac security issues.

Yep, you are a real victim here.

44. If you pay close attention to what was said, he said “.mac mail was more secure than gmail because gmail stores emails in conversations”.

Quite a different statement than what you are trying to make.

I dont even think .mac mail is even on the radar in comparison to yahoo, gmail, or hotmail. If by more secure you mean security by obscurity, in that the users of the main web email giants by far trump .mac subscribers, thats an entirely different conversation and even less effective philosophy on security.

45. So it wasn’t the security issue itself, but the nuances of his explanation the known security issue that caused you to cuss at him in front of a customer. My bad. When you put it like that it is perfectly sensible.

46. Hamilton what are you talking about?

There is no security advantage or disadvantage of .mac over Gmail. If using the webmail interface they both encrypt username and password on the login page (https), they authenticate via SSL, and once logged in both sites display the contents of your email in an unencrypted page (http).

If accessing through an email client both .mac mail and Gmail use SSL to connect to their pop servers. His statement was a lie, period.

They both use the same industry standards to deliver your email.

Anyway, his comments toward me were offensive and inappropriate, but has nothing to do with the issue at hand which was the poor repair work performed by Apple, and the GM trying to pass it off as acceptable.

47. Actually, I just set up a test trial account with .mac and the .mac webmail server does NOT support SSL over html pages! This is contrary to what I have read in their security policy located on the webmail.mac.com which says, “When you log in, .Mac uses industry-standard SSL encryption to protect the confidentiality of your member name and password.”

From what I have seen in testing this is it does not use SSL until after you submit your user and password on a NON secure webpage.

In other words you get http://www.mac.com/WebObjects/Webmail.woa. Login and you are authenticated via SSL, and it returns a http:// page. After you are logged in you can change http:// to https:// and it redirects back to a http:// page.

When you login to Gmail the page is by default https://www.google.com/

I was always under the impression that both pages were secure, and have read numerous times on forums that they were. However it seems their webmail pages are not equivocally secure, only through email clients.

HTH,

Leet

48. I don’t know much about webmail security one way or the other - I just looked it up after seeing your comments about how you saved the poor customer from the Apple guy. What I found on Google was numerous articles over a three year period talking about security exploits in gmail, including press releases from Google addressing the exploits. But if you say they aren’t there I’ll believe you. Google was probably just hoodwinked by that same Apple guy.

49. hamilton said:
I don’t know much about webmail security one way or the other
You should stop right there on any discussion of security, email or otherwise.

Yes, Google has had and will continue to have security patches as will Apple for .mac/mail. Don’t be dense, that is no indicator that one platform is more secure than another.

By your logic, the integrity of security of anything would be determined by how well you can search google. If you search for apple/.mac mail/email [updates] you will see just as many security releases as gmail has if not more. Now are you going to retort by counting the number of security releases over a 3 year period to make some random, ineffective, irrelevant, and ridiculous point?

It was obvious you didn’t know much of, if anything at all about security as soon as you resorted to using the number of search results as justification to your comments. Even with .39 cents you could’t supersize stupid that big.

You have no idea what security means as a philosophy nor understanding of concrete metrics/methods/technologies therein.

Please stop posting, you contribute nothing useful, constructive, nor meaningful to this conversation.

50. ok - try this: I know a lot about computers. I know an assload about power tools. But I still know enough to be discreet in offering unsolicited advice to other customers, whether in the Apple store or in Home Depot. If I have a contrary opinion from the sales person I know it is best to share it in a non-confrontational manner. I know enough not to disparage a guy by NAME on the net and make fun of his faith, all based on some weak ass video in which the man says next to nothing to support my extreme allegations. By your own statements on you blog, you started the sh*t with him. Do you go to the Dodge dealership and slap everyone with the f****in JDPowers report and cuss at them in front of their customer for trying to sell a Dodge? The Apple guy is a SALES associate. Don’t act all offended if a SALES associate is trying to SELL stuff in his own store. First you get in his face in the store and then you essentially try to frame him on the net. Like I said, he may have said those things, but you have NOTHING to back it up. You simply come across as a petulant half-wit.

51. The sales associate framed himself, period. All I did was have him verify and repeat what he said in a threatening tone in the first place. Get over it. It has nothing to do with the BS excuses and poor repair work performed on my laptop.

Im sure you do know a lot about power tools, even moreso that none of those power tools involve security.

When I called the sales associate out it was in a non confrontational manner. In fact he addressed me when I looked at him puzzled for making such a statement. I cant help if it the sales guy was embarrassed he was called out on a lie. In fact if I was the customer I would be infuriated that a sales associate lied to me to buy something I didn’t need. Trust is placed in sales associates for a reason, especially at Apple. But go ahead, you can assume I “got in his face” all you want because you were obviously there when it happened.

I wasnt making fun of him for his faith, I was pointing out the hypocrisy between his religion and his actions.

As far as this thread is concerned you are certainly not one to comment on someone being a petulant half-wit, or shall we review your security logic and assumptions again?

Once more, I recognize your right to your opinion but you contribute nothing useful, constructive, nor meaningful to this conversation.

Regards,

Leet

52. “The sales associate framed himself, period. All I did was have him verify and repeat what he said in a threatening tone in the first place.”

What are you smoking?!?

He says “I NEVER SAID THAT”. He only verifies that he said “If YOU want to throw down…” He doesn’t even finish that thought. Was it “If you want to throw down I will call security” or “If you want to throw down you are in the wrong place” or “If you want to throw down I have a Glock in my back pocket”. Who knows, because HE DOESN’T SAY ANYTHING ELSE. You are delusional about your video.

Based upon the serious disconnect between what you think is on that video and what is actually on the video, I have serious doubts about the civility of your initial encounter with the sales associate.

53. Hamilton give it a rest man.

It doesnt matter if you believe it or not. You have no authority to make a change in the situation, and in effect, your unconvinced position is irrelevant.

If you bother to look at the first video on YouTube, he makes a smartass comment to me unsolicited when I initially walk in to the store.

He later came up to me, unsolicited, over a month after the incident where I had corrected him and made the statement. He told me if I want to throw down he will meet me in the parking lot after work. All I needed to do was get him to verify the threat made to me when I turned the video from my cell phone on. Period.

An employee of a retail store should NEVER be using that language to a customer. I was followed around the store by him and had to ask him multiple times not to talk to me. That is documented in the second video on YouTube.

So please please try to correct me again by what I “think” is on the video. The only disconnect is with you and reality. You werent there when it happened. If you feel I am misrepresenting what happened then fine. I don’t really care.

Apple has recognized that the employees actions were wrong, nothing like that should ever be communicated to a customer and duly apologized for it. They also apologized for the difficulty and sub standard repair work performed on my laptop, and replaced it with a new one.

Case closed.

Oh and the more you comment on this the more “popular” it gets, and indirectly the more “heavily” its indexed in Google, thus more visible in search engines and to people searching about bent macbook pros. Thanks for helping spread the word.

;)

54. I would be very interested to know if anyone else can hear the Apple guy verify or repeat threats on that video. I sure can’t.

55. hamilton said:
I would be very interested to know if anyone else can hear the Apple guy verify or repeat threats on that video. I sure can’t.
@hamilton, 14 seconds into the video the employee very clearly states “I said ‘If you want to throw down’.” If I have that said to me by a store employee - whether I’m at fault or not, that’s obviously a threat.

I’ve also read your comment that talked about calling security. It is what it is. The employee verified, quite condescendingly and affirmatively that he did say those words.

Bottom line, those words could be construed as nothing but a threat and they are clearly audible.

56. Well guys it looks like my complaint and my video made it to the official apple discussion forums.

http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5020231

Looks like I have more supporters on there as well.

57. The poor customer service is certainly a big problem and there is no excuse. But there is even a BIGGER problem here–quality control.
I’ve been seeing this in NYC with handfuls of MBP. For the past two years the quality of all Apple products has dropped. Its as if they’re no longer care about being the leader in quality and design. You can even see the poor quality of the Nano click wheels as compare to the Video iPods for example. It use to be that EVERY Apple product was held up to a fine standard–now they just push them out and hope that no one will complain (or know better).

Apple- you better get to the plant make sure the Quality Control managers are doing their jobs!

58. I bought a 17″ macbook pro and haven’t had it a year and now must send it to apple to be repaired because of heat issues. As far as I am concerned a repair amounts to a band aid. The cooling methodology employed on this unit is pathetic. The exhaust ports are blocked by the display mount. I must use an antec cooler s device consisting of 2 barrel fans to help draw air out of the casework and blow air on the bottom of unit to maintain stability.

Before any apple freak tells me the unit shouldn’t be used on your lap, I run it on a table. Yet, apple marketing to college students depicts a macbook on a student’s lap and also using “On your lap. In your dorm room.”

Kernel extension crashes, lockups, heat related failure of keyboard and trackpad, wireless connection drops, bluetooth slowdowns and drops, inability of unit to display a login prompt after waking from sleep, different service modules faulting with different installations of the os and now battery capacity that fluctuates from one minute to the next from ~6000+mAH to ~100 mAH no doubt caused by overheating of the logic circuit in battery pack have proven once and for all to me apple is no better than any other manufacturer. The RAM and HDD test good and all updates are installed and I have installed the os at least 7 times now.

I am sick of the pedantic babble of Steve Jobs. I never have liked the man since the day he compared IBM to the big brother of 1984 in the Insanely Mac marketing hype unveiling the GUI based Mac he was gifted by the board of directors of XEROX who could not see what their geniuses at PARC developed in the 70’s. What a slap in the face of a company that pioneered mass scale computing going back to the days of the Tabulating Machine Company of the 19th century. Imagine how less advanced economically and otherwise society would be today if it were not for the efforts of IBM in the first part of the 20th century. Such POMPOUS ARROGANCE.

SO SICK of the everyone copies US crap. SO REPULSED with the assertions that everyone else is third rate trash compared to apple. SO THOROUGHLY DISGUSTED with the apple is perfect, flawless and that Microsoft screwed us MANTRA. At least Microsoft admits its flaws and mistakes while apple will do everything in its power to not admit its shortcomings and flaws and blame them on everyone else who contributes to the apple platform (e.g., intel, atheros).

DISGUSTED with the apple zealots who swarm pc, windows, linux and unix forums with their snide name calling crap and then cry foul when a pc worlder does likewise. Such the liberal methodology, “We are not bound by the rules by which we expect you non-liberals to be bound” crap.

TIRED of the attempts by apple marketing to assume the status of progenitor of a technology it might first have used in their platform but was created by someone else. Many apple freaks do not realize how much of apple’s existence is owed to XEROX PARC and ADOBE, founded by John Warnock, a former PARC researcher who devised a method of printer control while at PARC. Many apple freaks would actually believe apple invented the mouse when the mouse was actually invented in the 60’s by Dr. Doug Englebart at Stanford Research Institute. Don’t forget Al Gore invented the internet too. OH, by the way, apple invented ethernet networking, not Robert Metcalfe, another genius at PARC.

In the words of your beloved GOD STEVE JOBS, “Good artists copy, Great artists steal. And I will unashamedly admit I steal ideas.”

So, enough already with the MANTRA that apple invents everything while everyone else steals from and copies poor old apple.

apple doesn’t even deserve to have its name capitalized as far as I am concerned.

After having observed enough apple zealots, I have come to the conclusion they possess the same character traits and psychological dynamics of religious cultists. I would in fact not be surprised if many are cult members and most are just the mindless entertainment zombie masses who collectively justify the outrageous economic value ascribed to acting, musical and athletic talent while us scientists, engineers and technocrats are of little economic value and consistently told to make wealth off of our skills is an abasement of humanity which justly deserves the fruits of our efforts without cost.

GOODBYE apple, from this onetime buyer of a macbook pro and mac mini. I will continue my support of the pc industry which is responsible for much of the hardware diversity enjoyed today. Much happier with this way than to buy hardware inflexible apple systems designed for point and click monkeys whose existence for the most part is measured by the entertainment they can derive in life.

BOW DOWN TO THE ALTAIR OF JOBS YE CULTISTS OF JOBISM. As for me, HASTA LA VISTA. NOT.

59. @skolnikrules
but dude, pcs have nothing but viruses and spyware. ha! your post is one of the best “shut it” to apple fanboys/girls i’ve read in awhile.

anyways. this post and its amazingly idiotic comments almost makes me wanna throw my macbook, ipod, and iphone out the damn window. this blind faith of apple fanboys makes me utterly sick to my stomach. what’s the deal with all these people basically saying, “hey, it’s flawed but deal with it. it’s so awesome that if this product (seriously, it’s a product, not manna) wants to be all bent, we gotta let it.” what the hell kind of logic is that? apple is not my creator and i don’t have “just accept” what they choose to bestow. seriously if i handed over 1400 of my hard-earned dollars (more than half the price of the original btw) to someone to fix something, they better damn well fix it perfectly! the car argument above is absolutely APPALLING. first of all, to make your analogy work, this guy would have gone to some back-door shop where everyone expects “good enough” results. however, if you decide to go to the dealer (which this guy did) and they promised to fix it (not we’ll fix it so that it looks presentable but FIX IT which implies to its original workmanship), the car better look just as good before the accident occurred. why are you people taking a corporation’s side when mostly all of you, if not all, are consumers? shouldn’t we all be taking the side of the person (uhh, a consumer like you) who obviously was wronged from this incident? further more, you believe you can justify this incident because apple (who btw pees themselves over how better their products look over the competitor’s) is selling a product with obvious cosmetic defects? is this where we are right now? someone makes a shoddy product and we defend them for doing so? AND quality of the repair aside, by defending this crappy apple employee, you’re basically saying that once you’re graced with the spirit of apple, no human being could be a bad human being! where’s the outrage that *hitty employees deserve when they do a horrendous job? seriously, just like our system government, the power is (technically) with side of the people. only when no one complains (or allowed to) and blindly accepts what the “great leader” says to the letter is when we lose that power. when the people bow down to the leaders that’s when they come around from behind and you get f*cked. haven’t any of you noticed already that the quality of apple products have been less than stellar lately? i have had 3 ipods so far and the best one i’ve owned so far is the 2nd gen. do you know why this is? back in the late 90s and the early 00s, apple actually gave a crap about quality control cause they had to prove themselves. now, because everyone just accepts what apple gives them, i had to send my 5th gen ipod back twice because the battery died within a month. my macbook is mediocre at best (the heat, god the heat!) where as my ibook was one of the greatest piece of technology i ever owned. if you truly love your apple (even though i really don’t understand that much loyalty to someone who charges you top-dollar for their products. aren’t they just expected to perform well?) then your job is to closely scrutinize their practices, good or bad. i already know you fanboys are seething at your teeth waiting to type “but it’s still totally better than anything else dude! microsoft sucks. all other os’ sucks (umm.. osx is what, based on linux?)!” whatever. i owned started buying apple computers before you were even an afterthought in the backseat of your mom’s chevy. i’ve seen great products from apple and i’ve seen some disasters (tool around google and you’ll find them if you take your damn blinders off). you keep bowing down to your god and watch your 3rd gen iphone be made out of cardboard because it was so much sexier than all other materials.

60. one more thing,
i do realize the shortcomings of microsoft as a producer of SOFTWARE. don’t give me the same tired arguments about it. we’re talking about hardware and service.

61. Rich 1, Fanboy’s 0

62. Just as FYI - and perhaps back to one of the primary topics - I just bought a brand new 15″ powerbook and I also have the warped lid. Did not notice it at first but when the unit is closed and latched, the right front side near the corner is bent up and leaves a very visible gap. I am really sad to see that this appears to be a long standing issue and that Apple has not appeared to have fixed this as a general problem. I have had many, many laptops and never had an issue like this until my MBP. Seems rather like shoddy workmanship to me, and on a product that seems so high-end and one in which asthetics are clearly very important.

63. I’ve had my MBP for almost 2 yrs. I have a personal friend that works in the mac store near where I live, he takes care of all my repairs and tech support for me. I had the same problem with my mac, in fact , the battery was swollen, the track pad wouldn’t work, it wouldn’t hold a charge, the keyboard quit responding, it was overheating, the fan was clicking.. blah blah.. he took care of it all, it was a week ago when I got it back… no problems so far, and the lid is virtually bend free for now, my purpose for stating this is not to rub your nose in the fact that I was able to get mine fixed, but to show.. that you were most definately lied to, so just continue to demand that it be fixed.. and continue to put this video on blast all across the net.

64. YOU THINK YOU GOT PROBLEMS WITH APPLE:

Hard Drive Failure
I have had 4 replacement Apple laptops from Apple in 18 months. If you believe in Murphy’s Law and Probability theory then that means Apple reliability CAN NOT be relied on i.e. the more you work a machine the more you will expose its flaws. The worst laptop has been the Mac Book Pro 17″. I have endured owning the first machine (Powerbook) for 5 days before a fatal crash, flickering screens, loose battery, noisy fans, overheating, memory leaks (Safari slows down/crashes), inability to quit applications so you have to either force quit them or pull the battery out to turn off. Preference file (plist) corruption, inability to wake up from sleep mode (surely a Freudian message here for the technical department), view corruption/missing folders in Mail, loss of data in burn folder operations, incomplete data transfer in target disk mode, incorrectly seated memory chip and finally hard drive failure on laptop number 3 (less that 12 months old) - yes that is correct! 2 out of the 4 Macs I have owned, have had Fatal Crashes/Hard Drive Failure! If you are interested in taking up meditation/enrolling in stress management classes or just prefer to waste an inordinate amount of time and money, then this is the machine for you. P.S. Something Apple won’t tell you: If you are unfortunate enough to have bought one - Don’t move the laptop whilst it is going into sleep mode.

IN SUMMARY: APPLE = THE MOST OVERPRICED UNRELIABLE CRxP YOU COULD EVER HAVE THE MISFORTUNE OF BUYING.

65. P.S.
IT’S ALSO TAKEN APPLE EXECUTIVE RELATIONS 18 MONTHS TO FINALLY ADMIT THAT THERE IS MASSIVE MEMORY LEAKAGE WITH FLASH ON A MACBOOK PRO USING SAFARI (BROWSER CRASHES)

66. Ian said, “……IN SUMMARY: APPLE = THE MOST OVERPRICED UNRELIABLE CRxP YOU COULD EVER HAVE THE MISFORTUNE OF BUYING.”

I’m not sure why this happens to some people and not others, but from my experience you are the exception. I’ve owned macs for nearly 15 years, and I have found them to be the most reliable, longest lasting computers out there. I’ve also purchased numerous macs for work and turned dozen of people on to them, with similar results. When I’ve had a problem apple fixed them promptly (they seem to break early in their life, if at all) and correctly.

Sounds like you were one of the few who got a bad Apple.

67. AppleCare didn’t work for me at all. They turned me a way claiming “liquid damage.” I never spilled anything on my computer or took into the shower or bath. I never sang with it in the rain, never put it in the dishwasher, washing machine. I never hosed it down. At best there was condensation on a component inside the machine. But do I assume that risk if I’m using the machine in a normal environment?

Anyone else get this response from apple?
I’m trying to get them all in one place:
http://appleliquiddamage.blogspot.com

68. Since day one I had problems with my macbook pro. It started with the display not being plush when computer was closed. Then random internet signal drop, random blue screens and freezing soon fallowed. So I took it in for repair. I was told that my mac is within the specs and I had to live with the **** craftsmanship. My macbook pro was also put under a stress test and none of the problems were detected. I was then told they restarted the system and thing should be okay. I took the computer home and was glad that nothing was really wrong. It has been over a month and I still have the same problems. I made an appointment and will be bringing my computer in this week. What should I do if they tell me the same **** I was told the first time?

69. Show them this page, and my other post on here that shows Apple replaced it due to it being defective.

70. In my case once local retail management became aware of the situation–the stepped up and resolved it.

Not ‘perfectly’; but they resolved it..

71. This is the second macbook pro that was delivered. The first one had a bent screen, and now the replacement has a bent screen. Do you think it is worth the trouble to call apple and demand yet another? What if they send me another bent screen? Yes this whole thing really pisses me off! why don’t they fix the dam lid once and for all so people don’t have to blog about it. And if so what would be a good demand for the trouble 5 10 15% off. they already credited me 100 from the last call.

72. This is truly laughable. Aluminum is soft. When the Macbook Pro is latched, it bows ever so slightly downwards in the middle. That can lead to a slight raising of one or both sides of the lid’s extremeties. ALL ONE HAS TO DO IS FLEX IT VERY LIGHTLY IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION EVERY NOW AND THEN TO “FLATTEN” THE EFFECT. It doesn’t do damage, any more than the pressure from the latch causes damage when it pulls the center of the lid down. IT’S A NON-ISSUE. You are making fools of yourselves. It’s like complaining about a door being slightly ajar when all you have to do is close it. It’s a lightweight aluminum lid. It has the characteristics of such. If you want an iron or wood or plastic computer, go buy one instead. There is NOTHING wrong with the lids of Macbook Pros. But if your visual senses are affronted by a meagre little gap at the edges, it can be rectified with your own hands in about 5 seconds.
This is as dumb as taking the machine back because there’s dust on the screen and saying there shouldn’t be. In fact, it’s harder to clean a screen than it is to rectify the raised edges of the lid.
The fellow who has made the video has recorded his own stupidity for posterity. What a dunce.

73. when I spend 3000 dollars on a computer I expect the display to sit flush when its closed. Call me crazy. I pay for the best and that is what i want. If apple advertises the computer as being sleek I don’t want a clearly bent display… While you spend time bending your display with your hands, and i hope you brake it! I will be at home with my MBP with a perfect display because i don’t settle for anything less then what i payed for.

74. IF YOU WANT TO REALLY KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE BEING A MACBOOK PRO OWNER READ MY COMMENTS HERE:(see red writing –Hard Drive Failure — Ohh but it gets worse….)

http://www.appledefects.com/wiki/index.php?title=MacBook_Pro

75. Trust me, people - this is not someone whining aimlessly. I and a few of my friends also have had this bent MBP display problem. I have gone through four MBP’s (not at an Apple store - I wouldn’t go near one those with a ten foot pole) which have ALL had the exact same problem. Great customer service when you’re dealing with the company and not a store, but ****ty products.

Kind of a joke when you’re paying over $3000 for a computer.

76. The fit of the cover was not clear to me, but if the cover is not fitting perfectly after a repair. Ask for a manager come in with a camera and take a picture of the fit. Go to a brand new MBP and take a picture of that. If they are the same, you have to say OK it’s definately cheap recycled aluminum and they have a manufacturers defect that should be noted. Call corporate and e-mail them the pictures and compare it to PC’s if you have to. And tell them you hope nothing happens to your computer that would accidentally destroy it

If stil no help let them know you have it on video and will put a nice video together using a PC you have. Let them know the conclusion with be using the same Apple music with a picture of you moving items in your freezer, slipping the MBP into the freezer where the items originally were and then placing items back onto the MBP and you closing the cooler.

The last act would be you working in your home wirelessly on a Dell answering a question from a friend, I thought you had one of those top of the line Apples? And then just then he hits the enter key and send the Video You tube and he says, that cheap Aluminum they make it with won’t allow them to even shut and there is nobody in the company who cares.

Let he apple music play..

Another thing I like doing to folks is letting them know that your phone call to them might be getting recorded for quality issues. It blows their minds-they can tape you, but you can’t tape them? Makes great video-believe me. I put together a video like that and e-mails an executive after going nowhere and got a response within an hour. Everything was resolved and we were best friends. It is better to be feared than respected when dealing with corporations.

Give them a day and then post it.

77. I recently bought a 17inch MBP and after two months the display is now bent at each side of the lock mechanism.

When the MBP is closed the gap between the base and the screen corners is around two millimeters.

I’m afraid the bending will get worse and worse over time, and I’m more afraid to the fact the screen could be cracked due to the force inflicted by the bent plastic/aluminimum.

Apple HAS to quickly address this problem and replace the screen with a new design, for free! we are talking about the top of the line when it comes to apple laptops (MacBoock Line).

78. i bought a brand new macbookpro 17″ a little over a year ago and my lid did the same thing on its own,its the heat warped it i think,i didnt take it in under warranty until last week when my battery stopped charging on and off, apple support insists its not the battery although there was the recalls, so i took it into the apple store and got it back 4 days later
they adjusted the hinges so the lid closes better but its still warped and replaced the left i/o board- they were very nice to me
now ive had it back for the second day and whamo the battery doesnt charge properly gain?
i spent alot of money on this comp and the nearest apple store is almost an hour drive - im not really upset yet buy getting there
now i have to go make an appointment and find the time and gas to go through all this again? for the moneey i spent it should last
my sony viao,my toshiba qosimo and my gateway desktop and my 8 year old dell laptop all work fine(none ever needed hardware replaced) leaves me to ask - what makes this computer soo exspensive if it breaks?

79. well i sent my mac in and it came back worse then it was,lid still warped and they sratched it,after calling mac mac back they apologized and are replacing my macbookpro
im satisfied and will continue to remain a customer

80. The laptop is not bent. look at the pictures.

I’d want to fight this passive aggressive douche as well.
