My Biggest Complaint About Metro North Railroad

To and from work I ride the metro north railroad. For me, it’s often precisely on time and the schedule is typically ideal for me.

The 1:53am train is a different story. I’m unfortunate enough to have to take this train on a regular basis because I work a shift that ends at 1am. The 1:53am train is the last train out of manhattan and it is completely local until it’s last stop in Brewster, NY. At this hour I want to sleep. I want to shut my eyes and do what I call “time travelling”. One moment I’m in , the next moment I’m at my destination. Sleeping on the train is no problem because I set my cellphone alarm, keep it on vibrate and put it in my pocket. I can’t sleep however because they’ve designed their trains to prevent any slumber at all.

The back of the seat is at a 91 degree angle with a head support that angles inward. It’s also constructed of very tough vinyl covered cushions that aren’t very cushiony at all. The sides of the seats have extremely uncomfortable arm rests that will jab you in the side if you dose off sideways. I tried laying across all 3 seats but discovered that it’s not enough room for me even when I curl into the fetal position, and without a true pillow i’m sure to get a stiff neck the way my head hangs down. I was tired as all hell tonight and I had to force myself to sit up straight for the hour long ride to my stop. Just thought I’d whine to you guys about that.

  1. I was once stuck in an airport in New Orleans for close to 48 hours. I had to sleep at some point but “where” was the question.

It was the first time I had been introduced to this type of negative comfort engineering where the designers purposely make something like the train seats or airport furniture impossible to get comfortable enough to fall asleep in.

The thing that’s mind blowing is that I’m sure the same developers now work for the company that produced my current mattress.

  2. I agree– Metro North seats are the most UNcomfortable public transportation seats I’ve even been stuck on… that is, when you can get a seat… and can get over the god-awful STENCH on most of the cars… and rain isn’t dripping on your head…
