Five weeks after receving my MacBook, a fracture pattern appeared on the screen. An Apple technician said the repair would cost $465 and would not be covered by warranty, since damage to the screen is considered the result of an accident. I said there had been no accident. He said it may have been “an accident you were not aware of.” He suggested that a cat may have jumped on the MacBook and broken it.
The closest I can come to explaining the fracture is that my wife said she “closed it hastily.” if that’s enough to disable the MacBook — and void the warranty — they need to rethink their repair policy.

I talked to numerous Apple representatives, and emailed steve@apple.com, where you can appeal for help from Steve Jobs (or one of his representatives). Everyone said I’d have to pay for the repair. But when I picked up the machine, there was no charge. I don’t know how that happened, but I’m not complaining.
