I have a Macbook Pro 17″ and while I was driving to work it decided to split in half and bend the display making it very hard to close and not sit level with the table. I was in the Apple store and on the phone and was quoted as much as $1000 for the “repair” of “accidential” damage. To charge that much is complete BS and absurd. If this is a widespread issue as documented here why should I have to pay for thier faults?
Here is a picture of the bending: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3320/3199999796_541834d9f9_b.jpg
Apple should surely back their products and not have me pay up more rediculous money to “fix” this $3000 laptop.

Dang you must have hit a LARGE pothole.

OK - I’m confused. Not only did you say what caused the problem, but the picture speaks for itself. I’m sure a pothole that size also screwed with the alignment on your car. Are you going to call Ford and tell them they need to give a free repair?
If the computer cost $3000 that means a repair of $1000 is 33% of the original cost. If you had bought a $500 Compaq and had the same issue, would you scoff if Best Buy told you it would cost $165 to fix?
I don’t want to sound like an a$$ here, but if you can’t afford a $3000 computer, don’t buy one.

Where did it say I hit a pothole? I didn’t hit a pothole and the point is here that I should not HAVE to pay money whether it is 33% or 1%, there is a DEFECT in the manufacturing process of these crappy computers. Apple should fess up and fix them.
