My Biggest Complaint About Loud Motorcycles

I don’t know why Harley dudes get off on being loud, but somehow they think it’s cool when they irritate everyone within 100 yards. And please, don’t trot out the “loud = safety” argument… I’ll believe that when I see you also wearing bright orange vests and sporting yellow flashing lights on your helmets.

  1. On the “loud pipes save lives” argument - in addition to the fashionable safety orange vest and flashing helmet lights one could always consider adding that little known device to alert other drivers used for the last hundred years or so on all other motor vehicles including automobiles, boats and very loud trains called a “horn”.

  2. The noise from motorcycles is illegal - they are manufactured to be quiet and people change the mufflers, get your local law enforcement to read and enforce the laws. Use your state and local laws with the federal regulations below. Police can visually inspect mufflers for a the EPA label that will be present on street legal motorcycles and mufflers.

EPA Title 40, Part 205, Subpart D (motorcycles) and Subpart E (motorcycle exhaust systems)
