As if the acronym, cat images, and |33† speak across the interwebs wasn’t annoying enough - somehow the idea to combine all three in the form of lame captions has caught on and become a somewhat phenomenon.
I don’t care where it came from or if it was ripped of from somewhere else… it’s terrible.

I am the technical liason for my family. I have tried desperately to get the ones I love to do simple things like use email and upload photos, all to no avail. No emails, no photos - ever. Something really great like Skype? Forget it.
And then one day I tell them about the lolcats at icanhascheezburger.
The next day I have 50 emails from everyone sharing their favorite lolcat. More emails kept coming “How can I take a picture and do this? You gotta tell me, this is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen. How do I upload, how do I add text, oh please oh please help me now!”
Thousands of lolcat pictures was all it took.

the aol and livejournal 14 year olds from the 90s evidently never grew up and have gained ascendency. it’s mindbogglingly tragic.

A tragically insufficient sense of humor. But then, silliness is forbidden, isn’t it? It’s immature, ignorant, shameful..
