I got about 5 of these things for Christmas and I can’t take it any longer. I don’t know if they were
- On sale
- A legitimate mistake on the part of the gift-giver
- Something somebody thought I’d like
Whatever the case, dress shirts without pockets are terrible. They don’t look that great but my biggest complaint about dress shirts without pockets is that I’m used to having pockets!
I don’t wear a pocket protector or anything like that but sometimes I just want to throw my sunglasses or my cell phone into my pocket for a second. I’m always caught off guard with these shirts and find myself fumbling to find a new spot for my item that needs storing.
Form should follow function and these shirts don’t do that.

Button front shirts with pockets are not true dress shirts. The pocket makes them less formal, and therefore, less dressy. Ever seen a tux shirt with a pocket?
The pocket on the front was an “innovation” from Brooks Bros. in the late 50s/early 60s. The “new age clothing” has pockets — and while it might be useful and functional, they’re not dress shirts. Wear your new dress shirts, and if you really need the pockets, wear your suit jacket. You’ll be, and look, more professional, anyways.

Relax Jack Mehoffer, nobody gives a **** about the invention of the pocket.
When two pocket dress shirts disappeared from the retail stores, it really irritated me. To solve that problem I boutght single pocket, long sleeve shirts from retailers just after the Christmas holidays. They were usually 55% cotton, 45% polyester and advertised as permanent press. I think 65% cotton and 35% polyester would work also. These were standard dress shirts from Stafford, Enro, Arrow, etc. I found a seamstress who cut the sleeves off, made a pocket out of them and stitched them on the right side of the shirt. They looked very professional. I have been quite satisfied with the quality of her work.
If anyone wants her phone number, send me the request at kkbhr@yahoo.com. I will check with her and get back to you at your email address. I’m almost sure she would take orders, because when I delivered shirts to be altered, her job-finished bar was almost empty. The hard economic times have taken a toll on her business. People aren’t spending money anymore. I pay her $20 per shirt. If pictures are required, on Jan. 15, I am to pick up shirts she is doing for me. I could take digital pictures and attach a jpeg file of them to an email.
If there is interest in this, let me know at the email address stated above.

Actually, Jack is right. And seriously, men, how many pockets do you have at any one time? 4-5 on your trousers, 4-7 on your suit jacket/blazer, 2-5 on your waistcoat (if you’re even wearing a waistcoat, your shirt pocket is covered anyway!). Don’t try to tell me that as men you’re hurting for pockets to throw things into on the fly. My second best suit has 13 pockets, and I regularly only use 6 or 7 of them, though the more junk you have bulging in your pockets, the less organized and presented you look. Shirt pockets are tacky and useless. Not that I don’t use mine, but it’s not necessary, and I prefer shirts without.
tl:dr - Shirts don’t need a breast pocket.

Your complain is retarded. Dress shirts do not need pockets and in fact is quite outdated. When I look the most slick is when I have a dress shirt with no pocket. Try wearing a 3-piece suit with a dress shirt with a pocket and see how you look, retard.

The reason that shirts do not have pockets anymore is that because of pen stains and pocket sag the shirt has a shorter lifespan. Also when having shirts cleaned and pressed I have experienced that even though I never use the pocket it gets bigger than the underlying material stopping me from pressing it flat. I have heard many very fit men state that they don’t want the pocket so it fits better. With everyone texting and speaking on the phone it is rare to use a pen so the pocket went away and the manufacturers save a bundle.
