So, this company offers free tax e-file if you make under a certain amount. They then offer you to do your state for a fee of $12.88. I figured I might as well do them all together and paid.
Well, my state application was listed as “duplicate” and I was instructed to call the IRS. Wrong number. The very nice IRS agent gave me the CA number to call and get cleared up. That agent told me that the site entered the information TWICE so the forms would not be accepted because they were duplicate. He said I had to fill out a whole new form and send it by mail. I did such, and found out that citizentax.com had not given me all the correct deductions that was on the simple 1040ez form. I complained that their company error made me have to do my taxes myself and there system hadn’t even processed my information correctly. There is no number to a real person to call, just a very hidden and hard to find area to write in. After several interactions, they not only won’t refund me, but wrote “… we haven’t been clear. The fact that you filed another return with a tax preparer is irrelevant. Your CA return has accepted through our e-file…”
This company did not listen to a WORD I wrote, so on four attempts I give up.
DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE!!!!
They file your taxes WRONG and offer NO help to fix them, just an IRS number. Their “customer service” department is for several websites that you have to sign up to even use and they are NO HELP!!!
I’m out 13 bucks and had a whole day lost on the phone to clear up the mess they made.

We regret Circe’s bad experience; however, she needs to read the instructions and follow directions. We charge a fee for all state returns. It is not hidden, but is posted on the homepage for all to see. Circe’s issue is a duplicate for a state return. It is not very common, but occurred as she submitted her return multiple times resulting in a ‘duplicate’. Once a return is received by the IRS or State, the SSN is logged and a message is returned; however, if they receive multiple transmissions from the same taxpayer it is returned as a duplicate. This is her error – not the software and not CitizenTax.
Circe needs to take responsibility for her actions and not be a victim. We provide a superior product and responsive customer support and have e-filed hundreds of thousands of returns. We understand tax season is stressful, but her anger is misplaced.
A little advice Circe – next time, read the instructions.

WOW, If JG Rollins really is CEO of this citizentax.com company than they are very arrogant and you can easily see how difficult they would be to work with when the occasional problem does occur. It really is appalling A CEO of a company would take this dameanor with a customer over $13.00. I can bet you your response JG has lost you 1000 times that $13.00. When you could have just reurned the ladies $13.00 helped her get her error fixed and she would have gone on a rant on how you went far beyond the call of duty to help her out. And you would have gained customer.
owell I know who not to use for my future taxes.

It’s the 13th of April. I e-filed my taxes 5 days ago and never received my DCN number. I will never use them again. Their CEO is a joke. He even posted here for some reason. Losers try to cover their mistakes and this isn’t the place to do it. Mr. Rollins, your tax service is sub par. I will have to contact the IRS and determine what I have to do. I also have no clue as to how to get my 17 dollars back. I also tried to log on to Citizen Tax this morning and the connection was refused. To all reading this, I would use TaxAct. It’s user friendly. I prepared my moms taxes with it and within a day, she recieved her DCN number.
Mr. Rollins, your no CEO. You’re a joke.

i will never return to use citizentax… they triple-charged me for services that i did not even complete because their software is so entirely screwed up, and trying to contact a representative is nearly impossible! every email address i attempt is rejected. i am highly disappointed. after speaking with someone from the IRS, they advised me to delete everything and use a different program - i used the turbotax free program , which was incredibly simple and actually free!

I did my federal and Virginia returns on citizentax and it went through fine. I did have to read the directions carefully and check on a couple of things, but I didn’t have any trouble being accepted. I got my refund in just a few days. I have used the site for two years now, and have been completely satisfied both times.

CitizenTax screwed up my taxes too. Their attitude is arrogant and unhelpful. Just check out their website’s “Contact Us” button: that’s NOT where they put the info about how to contact them. It’s just a dead-end. (By the way, the REAL contact info, which requires a whole separate registration process, is buried in the FAQ section.)
I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and encourage others to do the same. Also, notify the IRS that this service is flawed and encourage them to remove the link to CitizenTax from their website.

I filed my return with this website last Thursday, and today I can’t access their site to check on the status of my return. The last time I checked on Friday the status was that they were waiting to hear back from IRS that it had been accepted. That’s the last time I checked until this morning, and not I can’t access their website. Has anyone else had this problem? I’ll keep trying–hoping they’ll get their site going again later today.

DO NOT USE CITIZENTAX.COM TO DO YOUR TAX RETURN. IT has HORRIBLE SERVICE. I had to call the state to make sure they receive my tax return because it says that my state return was a duplicate. WTF. I f****** submitted once.
Better alternative: TRY turbotax.com OR taxact.com.

BUT I do have a DCN number? I am so confused and yes, trying to get help from them is impossible.
I am stressing out because today is the last day. I filed in time, but am not sure if the IRS accepted the return or not.
Please help!

To Sheila, Not sure that the DCN # means much. I was finally able to access their site late on the 14th, but it wasn’t until the 15th that the site actually told me that the IRS had accepted my return. It did say that it was accepted on the 14th. Not sure about my payment yet, as that hasn’t cleared my bank yet although I paid by elect. check. I hope that too reached the IRS on the 15th. I have also used TurboTax before and they were much better at this whole thing that this website has been. I didn’t go with TT this time because they were still going to charge a fee for doing a simple 1040EZ. I didn’t get charged by Cit. Tax, but I think Ill stick w/TT next time.

I have also had problems with citizen tax. Ultimately, I was forced to file my state taxes late because the return was rejected. The CT website didn’t adequately explain how to fix the tax form, and didn’t provide a phone number for customer service. I won’t use CT again, and I intend to file a report with the Better Business Bureau.

I also like the difficulty one faces when trying to contact the company, it’s a joke. Citizentax, thanks for nothing. Now I’ve got to add a call to the Better Business Bureau, my state tax agency, the IRS, and my credit card company to my to-do list.

i agree- don’t use citizen tax. i tried to file MA state taxes here and they took my money but then had no website to actually file?! i’ve used tons of other websites over the years (including h&r block, tax-engine, turbotax) with at most minor problems and good customer service. this site’s supposed customer service site is inaccessible to me despite registering multiple times and so i’ve given up and reported it to my credit card company. irs.gov should remove this site’s link.

Citizentax is a rip-off. I just found out they never filed my tax return. Can’t contact them to find out why. They have my money. Here’s the kicker…I got to them by following a link on the IRS.gov website. If it is on the IRS website, I assumed the IRS endorsed this company. I spoke with the IRS after learning my taxes were never filed. He said the IRS couldn’t help me. I told him they should not have links to fraudulent companies on the IRS website, he was unaware that they even did this. He suggested I contact the Federal Trade Commission, which I intend on doing.
I also have filed a complaint with the Attorney General’s office in Arkansas (presumably where this company is headquartered). They also go by the name “Smokey Software”.
I have checked with Conway Arkansas Chamber of Commerce. They never heard of them (what a shock)!
If I have to, I will visit this a-hole in Arkansas and a gentle reminder that he can’t treat US Citizens this way. I will get my money’s worth from him one way or the other…it’s his choice.

Citizen Tax ruined me as well, but it’s going to cost me $215 as yet, maybe more. They didn’t file either my federal or state taxes in 2006, although by completing the online process I had every reason to believe they had. (Note: another annoying part of the Citizen Tax process is that they wouldn’t even let me print out my forms - just a “transcript” - but of course that wasn’t apparent until the end of the entire filing process) I gave my bank account number for the taxes to be deducted, but since it generally taxes a long time for the deductions to go through, I didn’t check my account regularly to see if they’d cleared. So then, in 2008, I get letters from both the IRS and CA Franchise Tax Board that I hadn’t filed 2006 taxes. And of course, Citizen Tax is nowhere. They have no phone number, their online customer service is a joke. They said their 2006 files are “closed” and that’s it. Now it looks like I’m out a bunch of cash and have nowhere to turn. DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE. There are better ones out there.

Chas on February 26th, 2009 at 10:38 am | Link
I will never use citizen tax free again. I wish I had done some research before I filed my taxes this year because I would have never used them! I, too, used the link for free file from the IRS.gov website thinking that if they were there the IRS must endorse them. Well my federal taxes, thankfully, were accepted but I can’t print them out, and now I question the calculations. Additionally, in order for me to file my state taxes I need answers off my federal forms. My children are not even listed on the dependents/exemptions section. Unfortunately, when I go to the print returns section for about 3 seconds I see pg 1 1040, pg 2 1040, Schedule tabs, and form tabs, then the schedule tabs and form tabs disappear. If I’m fast enough I can click on them, which I have, only to see that these schedules and forms are not applicable to my taxes. I have no capital gains, and no operating losses from a business. These are not part of my return! When I went through their convoluted complaint process (where I must open a ticket) I was told by Andrew that I should clear my cache and update my software. He was of absolutely no help. In fact the computer I did my taxes on was less than 30 days old. I plan on filing with the BBB and I appreciate the poster who posted the contact information as there is no where on their website to find this information. I did contact the IRS and asked them to send me a copy of my returns. They said they would do that after my taxes were processed. Everybody do yourself a favor and save yourself a headache, do not use CitizenTax!

DO NOT USE CITIZEN TAX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I followed the directions, filled in the forms and was told I successfully filed. Then after several months and no tax refund I called the IRS. The represntative said the IRS never received my 2007 return, yet Citizen Tax charged me $12.88 anyway. I’ve spent hours attemptng to find a way to cotact CT via their website for a refund, since the site provides no phone number. Currently the “CONTACT” link directs me to a page that says “Access Denied.” Citizen Tax APPEARS TO BE A DISREPUTABLE SCAM, and I plan on reporting them to any ad all applicable agencies.

I have already filed a complaint with the BBB. My next stop is the IRS. Citizen Tax has no business handling people’s sensitive financial and personal information.

Citizen tax (citizentax.com) is a terrible online tax service. Not only were they unable to complete my return in a prompt fashion due to some “complication” but they gave me a false status in the meantime (“awaiting IRS response” when it hadn’t even been filed yet.) Admittedly I filed taxes late (after april 15th) but only by a couple of weeks. That status of “waiting” was as of May 5th but then 06/19/08 they finally address my email inquiry (because you cannot actually speak to a human) by “RESETTING” my return. Also suggested that I not press enter twice. (how hard could it really be to have had the system developed to where hitting enter twice is not even POSSIBLE?) In other words, then I had to RE-FILE from scratch and wait even longer for my return.
Me too on March 19th, 2009 at 10:04 am | Link
I JUST finished filing with citizentax and I agree, I was very surprised when the system asked for $18.88 to file state taxes–the frontpage had NO MENTION of this whatsoever, and this amounts to bait-and-switch deception.
While filing, there were lag times of over 1 minute. I was worried.
Then I finished. Then guess what–I couldn’t log in and the system wouldn’t recognize my username, email, or password within 5 minutes of filing.
The “Contact Us” login was disabled and not taking its customary (?) forced logins.
So in total, you have a “free” service that hides its pricing until you have invested all your time into completing the federal tax section, then hits you with the charge that is NOT MENTIONED on the front page (dip****). Then the system is overloaded (understandable) but then you are unable to log in and the system doesn’t recognize your information (FAILURE).
On the plus side, the interface is easy to use.
So cheers. I give you an F for FCKED.

For any future readers who would like to file a complaint about this company, here is the link to the FTC:

Citizentax does not prompt you for all required information (i.e. 2009 stimulus payment, state employer id #). So it is likely your return will be inaccurate or rejected.
When rejected, you will not be notified. It will just remain “Transmission Pending” on their system, if you are lucky enough to be able to access your account.
Their system has a lot of failed logins for long periods.
Their “customer service” will basically just tell you to f off, and/or threaten you with legal action if you complain.
It blows my mind that a company of this ilk is allowed to operate legally. It should be taken off the IRS website immediately and red-flagged.
Yikes on April 13th, 2009 at 4:00 pm | Link
So after totally screwing up my state return, none of my login information works anymore, and I was never notified of the failed return, I just figured it out after redoing what I could with Turbotax.

I mean, I’d expect a lesser quality of tax prep service with a cheaper price, but to f it up this royally? Unfckingbelievable. And their customer service is a joke, they are a fly-by-night fraud.

I wish I had done an Internet search on Citizen Tax Free before I used this service. Last year, I used this outfit to file my taxes online — and got charged $18 and never received a copy in the mail of my state tax return. Now I’m finding out that the IRS never received a copy of my federal tax return, though it did indeed receive my check — I have a photocopy of the deposited check.
Of course, I went into Citizen Tax Free to try to find a copy of my tax returns — but if they exist anymore, I cannot access them. So I got a “support ticket number” — which is required to contact Citizen Tax Free — and plugged it in. When I went to look at the status of my inquiry by plugging in the number, I got a blank page …
I have contacted the IRS Criminal Investigations division in Northern California, and am about to send an email to the IRS unit that investigates fraud.

On the front of my 1040 my kids were not listed as dependents even though I had inputted the information. All in all I am now filing an amended return to gain access to a $1444 error cause of missed calculations and not walking you through the process. Oh and as for them threatening to sue please pick me I really hope you do! I have 4 attorney’s all family I would invite you to do so especially since one works for the Attorney General…LOL

I agree 100% with all the comments above as I have experience the same and I’ve saved all my corrrespondance to prove it. Why doesn’t Mr CEO put his money where his mouth is and offer live help when needed. What’s the point is requesting a phone number if they aren’t going to use to use it.

of those few who said their taxes went thru just fine…i’ll bet that if you redo them on another site (dont actually file tho) you will find that citizens calculations are wrong and you wouldve gotten a much bigger refund

I attempted to file with CitizenTaxFree due to the fact that it was listed on the IRS website… That will be the LAST time I make this mistake. The state income tax was rejected with codes that made no sense to the form that was submitted. I contacted the CS via email since they have no numbers listed and got a canned response that did not address ANY of the questions that I had submitted.
I was able to resubmit and 15 days later the state is still saying that have not received anything and the form is listed on the website as SUBMITTED. with no options to delete and try and submit it elsewhere. I do not want to run into a duplicate situation that many here have already experienced. Three emails later and NOT ONE of the questions asked were addressed and none of the requests for contact via telephone have been met.
STAY AWAY AND DO NOT USE!

Cathy, you’re right! The federal income tax was off by over 400 dollars and this was on the 1040ez form that had as basic calculations as you can get when dealing with the IRS. This site should be removed immediately from their website.

I just filed a complaint with the ftc about citizentaxfree. At the end of the complaint process a message comes up that the complaint will go into a database available to law enforcement. THE IRS SHOULD NOT LINK TO THIS CROOK.
