My Biggest Complaint About Chevy Giving $1000 College Football Scholarships

Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great that General Motors Chevrolet division gives $1000 scholarships to each college who plays NCAA football on television. If you’ve ever watched a college game, in the 4th quarter the announcers announce one “most valuable player” from each team and then give $1000 to his college’s general scholarship fund.

I swear I remember watching college football games 25 years ago with my grandfather, and they were giving $1000 scholarships back then. It would be nice if GM would at least recognize the concept of inflation and up the scholarships a bit.

My biggest complaint is that GM is getting an “advertisements of sorts” by sponsoring these and every year they essentially pay less for the same advertisements.

  1. You’re right on with this, Robby. I too remember watching games as a kid and hearing the likes of Keith Jackson say, “Chevrolet is proud to donate $1,000 to the general scholarship fund for… “. The amount hasn’t changed since I can remember. $1,000 is a token sum for the blurb when you consider the 100’s of thousands of dollars most schools get for the broadcast of the games. The networks have every right to do what they want with the advertising, after all they are spitting big bucks back to the schools which is probably used for much more than the $1,000 from the “general scholarship fund”. But you’re exactly right that the token amount has become a joke. Either increase the amount or dump the joke altogether. $1,000 in today’s college bucks is probably 3 books.
