Cell phones don’t need “Power Off” buttons.
I can’t stand calling someone on their cell phone, leaving a message and not hearing from them for days because they had their phone turned off and forgot to turn it on.
There are two basic reasons to have a cell phone:
- To make calls
- To receive calls
You cannot do either of these when your cell phone is turned off. “I don’t want to answer the phone all the time.”, you say? Fine - don’t, that’s what voice mail is for.
The “Vibrate” button is there for a reason, learn to use it.
Older people seem to me to be more likely to turn their cell phones off instead of putting them on vibrate. I’ve even had a few people tell me they turned their cell phone off because they wanted to save the battery.
Modern cell phone batteries can last for days on standby. “Talk Time” can last for hours before recharging. Don’t turn your phone off to save the battery.
I would like to see cell phone designers secretly replace the “Power Off” function with “Vibrate”. Keep the actual button looking exactly the same, it can just be our little secret. Bury the “Power Off” function somewhere deep in a submenu so that it’s impossibly difficult to locate.

I love turning my cell phone off.
I bought it so _I_ can make and receive calls when _I_ want, not so I can be on a leash for whoever wants to get hold of me at whatever time of day they want.
If the call’s important, leave me a message - I will return the call when I get it.
If it’s that ****ing important, you’ll make the effort to actually find me.

YEAH!
What he said.
Agreed. I’m not getting woken up by drunk or rude calls in the middle of the night. The vibrate is still noisy when you’re in a silent bedroom. And I’m not simply leaving the phone downstairs because I could easily forget it when leaving for work, or I could need the thing handy if I have an emergency at night.
Those who would need me for an emergency know my landline number. It’s the sole reason I keep the landline around… well, that and for signing up for things where you KNOW they’ll sell your number. Wouldn’t give my cell phone for that.

I agree with this but turning off a phone is required when flying on a plane. Other than that, very good point.
All of you old foogies have never heard of the “silent” mode. It does not ring or vibrate but allows people to leave you messages via text or voice. One word. Noobs.

That’s one of the best things about my cell phone; I can turn it off. Heck, if it’s THAT much of an emergency, people can call 911. I have a life beyond keeping my phone stuck to my ear.
Instead of turning my cell phone off or leave it on vibrate, I just put mine on silent.
I can’t stand hearing a phone vibrating either, so I leave my phone on silent all the time.
