Rap mogul Russell Simmons suggested banning the words “bitch,” “ho” and “nigger” from the recording industry. He said they should be considered “extreme curse words.”
My biggest complaint about banning these words from rap songs and the recording industry is that “banning” the words from the industry is a misnomer. The call to “ban” the words is actually a call to “bleep” the words out in the “clean” versions of the songs.
What does the “bleep” do?
Don’t you get it Mr. Simmons? The issue is not only with the sound the word makes, the problem is the meaning behind the word. The word reflects an attitude. The attitude reflects, as you and so many others have pointed out, the way things really are. The problem is that the word reflects the way things really are.
You can’t “bleep” an attitude.
