Don't blame the news media for reporting the news (heck even Fox news is reporting it). Instead blame those who are actually generating the news items (the Republican party and McCain campaign staff). Better yet, maybe we all should consider that Sarah Palin was actually a poor choice for McCain. She was unqualified, embarrassing, and committed numerous gaffs. mark, You really need to go back and re-read the things you and others write before posting. You make no sense. Maybe it is the sloppy writing, or the poor argumentation, or just your rambling. I don't know. Your claims about people who fail while trying to change a behavior having issues of trust, reliability, etc are just wrong. It sure sounds like you are saying that anybody that has ever tried to do anything - like quit smoking, lose weight, gain weight, not speed, or floss their teeth - even once and failed, has issues of trust and reliability. Or in your mind, is it just not quitting tobacco that creates this lack of trust and reliability?
On Barack Obama - He Smokes Cigarettes at 2008-10-16 19:35:18
Smoking doesn't show a "profound lack of character, nor does it show that a person cannot follow through with what he starts and should not be trusted to live up to his promises." Smoking and continued smoking probably indicates the person is hooked. Most smokers have tried to quit. Many fail. I have no idea what Obama's quitting history is like. Regardless, we don't have to look far to find smokers who are trustable, reliable, intelligent, contributing members of society. In my experience, most are. They just smoke (and should quit). Mark's argument has again misattributed everything to everything; he sees causation where there is none; and he makes generalizations that don't follow from his smaller factoids. I posted the original complaint. While it has no bearing on Obama's ability to run the country, I do wonder if there are any verifiable reports of him quitting smoking.

"Ok peopel finally new your journal of medicine, published an article on the research about diets and what is most healthful. Guess what it turns out that the all famous low fat diet is not the heart healthy way to go. The most healthful diet is the low carb style diet with a specific example of full fat peanut butter being better for your heart health then the low fat version." Mark, You are the one that chose to present yourself as a knowledgeable authority on this. 1. You chose to support your point by quoting a scientific reference that doesn't exist: new your journal of medicine. 2. You presented a "specific example" that was not in the study (and is inaccurate) 3. You then try to explain it by claiming that you heard it on a TV broadcast. Not exactly what you had said originally (and pretty weak scientific support). When people do things like this, it raises a red flag and it should. I don't think asking for a reference when you evoke a scientific study is inappropriate.
On Blaming Fast Food For The Obesity Epidemic at 2008-09-24 15:53:04
Mark, I don't think it is asking much to ask for a reference. People might actually be interested in where you got your facts, not because they don't believe you, but because they want to read the whole article. Anyway..... Much of what you said (as best I can tell as I understand what you wrote) seems fine. My major problem was with you stating, "The most healthful diet is the low carb style diet with a specific example of full fat peanut butter being better for your heart health then the low fat version." I found it odd because I follow nutrition research and I had never heard this claim. I read the entire full text of the reference you gave and nowhere does it discuss peanut butter. Likewise the article was not measuring heart health directly, it was measuring weight and some lipid/cholesterol blood levels. Of course the two are often related, but it is not accurate to infer that from this study. Nevertheless, like I said much of what you say on general terms was fine with me.

As for the absolutely absurd claim that a child comes out of the womb being one years old in China and one day old every where else in the world. It just doesn't work like that. Cultural relativity and custom doesn't usurp reality. The earth spins once in 24 hours. The Chinese don't alter physics or astronomy so that they can cheat in gymnastics. How is it that every stain on this president's record is blamed on the liberals. At some point, it would be nice if we started holding those with power accountable for their actions. Certainly there are diseases that are more infectious because of adaptations, but claiming that "In other words when you look at the charts (no not Al Gores charts) when we get into requiring more and more sanitizing the infiltration of disease increases on the large scale," is simply not accurate. Your claim that AIDS developed because of the germaphobic nature of society (and the implied sanitizing) is simply incorrect. And, a place that legitimizes stalking. I wish I would have thought of facebook, because I would be rich right now. Still, in the annals of the internet, facebook will be nothing more than a VH1 Special 15 years from now. People who were into facebook will be embarrassed.

Ian said, "......IN SUMMARY: APPLE = THE MOST OVERPRICED UNRELIABLE CRxP YOU COULD EVER HAVE THE MISFORTUNE OF BUYING." I'm not sure why this happens to some people and not others, but from my experience you are the exception. I've owned macs for nearly 15 years, and I have found them to be the most reliable, longest lasting computers out there. I've also purchased numerous macs for work and turned dozen of people on to them, with similar results. When I've had a problem apple fixed them promptly (they seem to break early in their life, if at all) and correctly. Sounds like you were one of the few who got a bad Apple.

The first two posts were nothing but single sentences of name calling. The posters provided no argument, no examples, no support for their position. They are basically bumper stickers and sound trite. At least Chewie took the time to provide some background so other people can understand why he thinks what he does. At least he thought about his post, gave us some insight to it, and did it in a way that was interesting to read (whether you agree with it or not). Chewie's post was then followed by somebody impersonating DBlock and doing the exact same thing the first two posters did. Not only did he he impersonate another member here, but he felt that it was necessary to use an explicative to do it. Again, adding nothing to the discussion. I don't think the fact that Chewie took time to write a longer comment makes Chewie a "borderline socialist liberal." If his words do, that's another matter. I have to say that it would be nice if people would actually take the time to share with us why they believe the things they do. At least it would it help everybody understand different perspectives. If nothing else it makes reading peoples posts more entertaining that just having to scroll through a bunch of name calling.

"looks&apperiance dont make a person." Regardless, it would be nice if the emo crowd would practice spelling and grammar. Maybe a complete sentence here and there. Sentences typically begin with capital letters. U is a letter, it's not a word. I could keep going. One day, you will grow up and you'll need to be able to read and write in real English. Although it may seem like it to you, the whole world isn't a text message. If you start practicing now, you might be ready for college in a few years. This is your big chance. The comment blank is waiting.

I think they wear them because they don't want the other team to mistake them for real football players. That way the other team won't hit them. It's like wearing glasses when playing football.

I think some commenters have mistaken bicep bands for orthopedic devices (which sometimes are wrapped around the arms). Please post some evidence that bicep bands actually apply force to ligaments or muscles and change the mechanics of the muscular system enough to "prevent tearing" of anything...

Thanks to Dennis for reporting this on mybiggestcomplaint.com. The Providence Journal has finally covered this accident and I would bet it was entirely (or mostly) because he was willing to say something here. Despite what we all think about the illegal immigration issue, this is a tragedy for everyone. Perhaps, we should close this thread. http://www.projo.com/news/content/IMMIGRANT_INJURED_12-22-07_A18BS4V_v36.27039d1.html Worker trapped by machine, severely injured Saturday, December 22, 2007 Providence Journal

Dennis, Just out of curiosity, is there a newspaper report or anything on this accident? It seems like something that would have been reported. It would be interesting to see what they are saying about it.

JuddyB claimed "Dog fighting is a black thang…" I have known a lot of black people, and while they often will say, "such and such is a black thing," I have never heard them said dog fighting was. In fact I've never heard anybody say it until you just did JuddyB. I think most black Americans are disgusted by Vick's behavior, even though many americans - of all races - enjoyed watching him play football and thought, before his fall from grace, he was a fairly upstanding man.

I spotted DeAngelo Hall on monday night football wearing a decorated eye black strip with "mv 7" decoration on it. Come on DeAngelo, as if wearing eye black strips wasn't bad enough, you have to wear them in support of Michael Vick. I realize you guys are old buds, but the dude was sentenced to two years in prison today for being a criminal.

I wanted to see if I could help other people by trying to fix this disk. Here's what I did. 1) I had a second hard drive in that machine, that I was using as a swap disk, so I put Leopard on it. It installed fine. The good thing was that I could see my old disk, and although it was clearly broken by the Leopard installer, I was able to get data off the disk. If you are having this problem, you may be able to load Leopard on to another disk (be it an external firewire or internal disk) and you may be able to salvage you data. 2) I then tried to see if I could repair the disk using Disk Utility. Neither the Tiger or Leopard Disk Utility (from the cd or from the hard drives) would fix the drive in question. I got a yellow or red exclamation point with a message to the effect that the 'keys were out of order' when I tried to verify the disk. 3) I downloaded a copy of Gentoo Linux for ppc, burned it to CD using the mac burning program, and booted my mac with that linux disk. I could again see and navigate the disks using the command line. If you are comfortable using the command line, you may be able to get your data off your hard drive that the Leopard installer broke this way. 4) I tried all the tricks I know for repairing the disk while I had it booted up with Gentoo Linux for ppc - like fsck and partitioning tools - but I could never repair the broken disk disk. 5) If you are trying to copy the USERS directory (which is probably what most people want to get off their mac when moving or upgrading a system), you may have to set up a root account if you are booted into OSX. If you try to copy the files and you are logged in with your normal account, you may run into permissions errors when you want to copy other users accounts. While trying to figure out how to fix this problem, I found several people who suggested using a program called DiskWarrior and who claimed to have success with it. I did not have a copy and I had gotten all my critical data off the disk that Leopard broke, so I did not purchase a copy of Disk Warrior. But, if you really must have that data, it might be worth exploring it.

They might be out there, but I don't see many Asians riding Harley's. What you described is definately what I've noticed among the Harley crowd. Even the "weekend warrior upstart Harley guys" have the goatee thing going on. I don't get that either. Seems like they should be getting fashion advice elsewhere.
