Or in your mind, is it just not quitting tobacco that creates this lack of trust and reliability?

Smoking doesn't show a "profound lack of character, nor does it show that a person cannot follow through with what he starts and should not be trusted to live up to his promises." Smoking and continued smoking probably indicates the person is hooked. Most smokers have tried to quit. Many fail. I have no idea what Obama's quitting history is like. Regardless, we don't have to look far to find smokers who are trustable, reliable, intelligent, contributing members of society. In my experience, most are. They just smoke (and should quit). Mark's argument has again misattributed everything to everything; he sees causation where there is none; and he makes generalizations that don't follow from his smaller factoids. I posted the original complaint. While it has no bearing on Obama's ability to run the country, I do wonder if there are any verifiable reports of him quitting smoking.

Gary, And excellent example of the enigma of Linux. It should by all accounts, be powerful and easy to use (and free), but then you try to customize it and, in my opinion, too often becomes a fight. Again, I do find Ubuntu to be well supported and I believe it has momentum going forward. All OSes have their negatives, but that version of Linux seems to be getting close to user friendliness.

I found it odd because I follow nutrition research and I had never heard this claim. I read the entire full text of the reference you gave and nowhere does it discuss peanut butter. Of course the two are often related, but it is not accurate to infer that from this study. Nevertheless, like I said much of what you say on general terms was fine with me.

I didn't mean to say/imply that "being a POW was cool" in the literal sense. I was saying/implying that the image that John McCain had (and in fact is still touting himself) at that time in my mind was that he was a surviving POW and this gave him some John Wayne like coolness. Not the most elaborate complaint, but I assume you are talking about CHENG Fei and her questionable vault. We were sitting here dumbfounded by the favorable judging that some of the Chinese gymnasts are getting. Cheng Fei landed, for all practical purposes, on her knees on her second vault and the judges reward her with scores that give her a medal. I can't say I've ever seen that in an Olympics. Not sure how you want to organize the protest. Perhaps we should all stop buying Chinese made goods :)

I posted this nearly a year ago and I don't think tobacco use has anything to do with running the country (for example, Bush doesn't smoke and he has ruined this country and the entire planet, so maybe it would be better to have a tobacco user in office). I am curious though, does anybody know if Obama is still smoking? I hate to ask if anybody has any current and accurate information, because I'm sure that the only responses will come from pundits and crackpots, who really have no knowledge of what they are talking about, but will pretend they do.

Hi Mark, I was wondering how long it would be before somebody chimed in about how the Liberals were really responsible for how the Bush administration acts. How is it that every stain on this president's record is blamed on the liberals. At some point, it would be nice if we started holding those with power accountable for their actions. Like I said, I'm not saying that the Bush admin directly caused this, as it is a global phenomenon. Nevertheless, it is yet another thing that has happened while this administration was in power. Allowing Florida and Michigan to have a mulligan (political sports analogy, see another complaint) would be equivalent to rewarding bad behavior yet again. The purpose of the original Democratic punishment was to remove the power that Florida and Michigan tried to usurp by moving their elections up (they wanted to have more influence). So now, if this attempt goes through, Florida and Michigan will have complete control of the election - total power. I believe this idea has been backed by Dean. In retrospect, it was probably good that he didn't get the nomination the last go around. It is ironic that idealist in the United States believe that we can export free and fair elections to fledgling countries like Iraq, when we have proven time and time again over of the past decade that we can't even do it correctly at home.

Actually, I have been watching the show quite carefully. I haven't seen one person with food in the last umpteen episodes. The Darma food drops happened in prior seasons. Perhaps we are to suppose that, just like to story of the "fishes and the loaves," that the food simply replaces itself. Granted, I don't want to see the mundane, day-to-day, experiences of Hurley. I do feel pretty sure though that if we did calculations on Hurley's caloric needs (considering expenditures & amount required for basic survival, etc) that number would not explain how a man that fat can gain weight while stranded on an island. You say you are constantly having problems with all the Apple computers at your school. What type of problems? Hardware breaking, software won't work, school doesn't have them upgraded or set up correctly? Your comment isn't very helpful and really runs against 20 years of experience with Apple in K-12 and Higher Education. If every machine is haveing problems every two minutes, it is probably the schools fault not Apples, If every machine is having problems every two minutes, you have plenty of specific examples that you could post here. Sounds like this really isn't an accurate or serious complaint about Apple products.

I honestly don't understand how the facebook founders ever got facebook to fly. My assessment of facebook is that it is a place for college students to post pictures of them and their friends doing stupid, inappropriate, and often illegal things for future employers, parents, and judges to see. And, a place that legitimizes stalking. I wish I would have thought of facebook, because I would be rich right now. At least he thought about his post, gave us some insight to it, and did it in a way that was interesting to read (whether you agree with it or not). Chewie's post was then followed by somebody impersonating DBlock and doing the exact same thing the first two posters did. Not only did he he impersonate another member here, but he felt that it was necessary to use an explicative to do it. Again, adding nothing to the discussion. I don't think the fact that Chewie took time to write a longer comment makes Chewie a "borderline socialist liberal." If his words do, that's another matter. I have to say that it would be nice if people would actually take the time to share with us why they believe the things they do. At least it would it help everybody understand different perspectives. JuddyB claimed "Dog fighting is a black thang…" I have known a lot of black people, and while they often will say, "such and such is a black thing," I have never heard them said dog fighting was. In fact I've never heard anybody say it until you just did JuddyB. I think most black Americans are disgusted by Vick's behavior, even though many americans - of all races - enjoyed watching him play football and thought, before his fall from grace, he was a fairly upstanding man.

I spotted DeAngelo Hall on monday night football wearing a decorated eye black strip with "mv 7" decoration on it. Come on DeAngelo, as if wearing eye black strips wasn't bad enough, you have to wear them in support of Michael Vick. I realize you guys are old buds, but the dude was sentenced to two years in prison today for being a criminal.

I wanted to see if I could help other people by trying to fix this disk. Here's what I did. 1) I had a second hard drive in that machine, that I was using as a swap disk, so I put Leopard on it. It installed fine. The good thing was that I could see my old disk, and although it was clearly broken by the Leopard installer, I was able to get data off the disk. If you are having this problem, you may be able to load Leopard on to another disk (be it an external firewire or internal disk) and you may be able to salvage you data. 2) I then tried to see if I could repair the disk using Disk Utility. Neither the Tiger or Leopard Disk Utility (from the cd or from the hard drives) would fix the drive in question. I got a yellow or red exclamation point with a message to the effect that the 'keys were out of order' when I tried to verify the disk. 3) I downloaded a copy of Gentoo Linux for ppc, burned it to CD using the mac burning program, and booted my mac with that linux disk. I could again see and navigate the disks using the command line. If you are comfortable using the command line, you may be able to get your data off your hard drive that the Leopard installer broke this way. 4) I tried all the tricks I know for repairing the disk while I had it booted up with Gentoo Linux for ppc - like fsck and partitioning tools - but I could never repair the broken disk disk. 5) If you are trying to copy the USERS directory (which is probably what most people want to get off their mac when moving or upgrading a system), you may have to set up a root account if you are booted into OSX. If you try to copy the files and you are logged in with your normal account, you may run into permissions errors when you want to copy other users accounts. While trying to figure out how to fix this problem, I found several people who suggested using a program called DiskWarrior and who claimed to have success with it. I did not have a copy and I had gotten all my critical data off the disk that Leopard broke, so I did not purchase a copy of Disk Warrior. But, if you really must have that data, it might be worth exploring it.

They might be out there, but I don't see many Asians riding Harley's. What you described is definately what I've noticed among the Harley crowd. dw17, Interesting. So are you saying that those non-NBC networks have no contracts with Notre Dame (even single game contracts)? If that is the case, it is even harder to believe that they don't switch when Notre Dame is getting blown out. Most likely Notre Dame will get the crap kicked out of them on some network station next week, and whatever network they are playing on could voluntarily switch to another game once the blowout begins but won't. I just don't get it. Even if people hate Notre Dame, like tc3 mentions, I can't imagine people really enjoying wasting their time watching any blowout. Maybe I'm just projecting my feelings onto them, though.

Exactly, when it is practiced as you describe, it is a job. Granted, it's not a good job and I wish the person would get a real job, but in some ways it is like a sad form of employment.

That sounds pretty annoying (and expensive). I have to say though, that I don't really think Apple should repair it under any type of warranty. By your own admission, it was an accident that caused it. Perhaps you can ask the airlines for some compensation. I do wonder though, if you got "all the information" from your daughter (or if she really knows when the accident happened). The reason I ask this is not because I think she's not telling the truth, but because I have a macbook pro, and I've dragged it all over the place, including international flights, into rainforests, on crazy bumpy boat rides, etc, etc. I've never had an issue with it. I do properly protect it, but it has taken its fair share of jolts (and worse). Many pro's also can carry their macbook pros all over the planet. I would find it hard to believe that a bumpy landing cracked the screen (now if some other thing slammed into it , that's different), but I guess anything is possible. I don't think buying a dell is going to change things. You may want to call your homeowners and renters insurance company and see if they'll cover it.

Somehow we went from "is Apple's .Mac Mail Secure" to "You Can Get .mac Accounts for Less Than the Price Advertised on Apple's Website," which didn't really answer the question posed. Would everybody be happy if it was "My Biggest Complaint About Apple’s $69.95 .Mac Email - Not Secure?" The price really doesn't have much to do with how secure it is.

nopatience, We feel for you, but you really should invest in a macbook pro. Despite the problem that notquiteleet had with his defective repair, it really is a phenomenal machine. It has an iSight camera built in, and Skype works (mostly) well for videoconferencing right out of the box.

I think the London Olympic Committee comissioned Trey Parker and Matt Stone to draw this logo. It looks like something from South Park. That website, buzzdroid.com, does these things called Icon Battles to determine the worst icon. They should put this one up against any other Olympics Logo. I bet this would beat out every other icon ever, including those that haven't been designed yet.

It's not even close. You'd have to argue that people panicked and that it caused chaos, and that people were hurt. That's what happens with a terrorist threat (much like screaming fire at a Ted Nugent concert). I disagree, the people who came up with this should be promoted.

I don't know. I like going to a site, and seeing a search blank, and typing in a word, and getting to where I want to be fast. Expecting a user to append a ?s=search to the end of a URL isn't my idea of functional design.

This violates virtually every tennent of organ transplant ethics. Granted, if I want, I can give (one) of my kidneys to whomever I please. I can even sell my kidney (in some countries). But having the public vote on who is most deserving of the kidney, and having third parties who are not affiliated with the donation system (TV production company, advertisers, etc.) making big money off the transaction, is ethically problematic.

For the record, the sound on my Treo 600 is also way to low and my treo is broken and is stuck on FULL VOLUME (I can't turn it down). The odd thing is I had the old Treo 300 and I could hear fine. Yes, I'm a linux freak too. My post wasn't about if you could transfer your music to an ipod. Hell, you can even run the linux operating system on your ipod if you want. As a rule of thumb, if you have to suggest that somebody contact the "usergroups of your distribution" you're not talking about real integration (and you're a linux geek and the person that would do such a thing is a linux geek, too. Another good rule of thumb is that: two linux geeks don't equal integration). If linux ever is going to make it on the average homeowner's computer, then they will have to secure one button iTunes installation and support (or something pretty darn close). Like I and chewie said, Apple needs to release a linux version. But why would they because they know that linux would take off if they did.

That sucks. The earbuds on my " iPod In-Ear Headphones" went out three times. Apple replaced them, but after the last time I gave up on them all together. At least nobody stole them.

puddles, It seems like I have to get heavy duty scissors or a utility knife to open almost everything I buy. Often I actually cut the item. AND in addition, the amount of waste that is generated (not biodegradale and easily recyclable waste, at that) is tragic. On things, for example, like a memory card, there is often 10x10 inches of thick plastic and it weighs more than the item itself. Insane.

I could not agree more. When this happens, I find myself saying (to myself and the person), "Just because your stupid cell phone is ringing, doesn't mean you have to answer it. Do you have any self-control?"
