My Biggest Complaint About Apple RAM Memory Upgrades - iMac, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, Mac Mini

Twenty-Year Apple fanboy here…..

I understand that Apple and other manufactures (HP, Dell, Sony) charge a premium for RAM upgrades when you order a new computer for them. Let’s face it, they should charge a bit more for the memory or hard drive when they ship the computer, because they do have associated costs of stocking, installing, and processing the upgrade.

Nevertheless, the price that The Apple Store charges for memory is simply insane and it has been that way since 1988. For example, I just ordered a new 2.4GHz Aluminum iMac for my dad (beautiful machine, btw) and the Apple price to upgrade the iMac to 4Gb of memory is $850! I just got equivalent (probably better) memory from www.newegg.com for $100 shipped to his door.

Back then it was hell to install memory in an Apple computer. Now, it takes about 5 minutes. Why should Apple, the master of making computers easy, not price their memory upgrades competitively so that the user doesn’t have to mess around with it. I can’t see why anybody would chose to pay Apple $750 extra for memory that takes 5 minutes to install. Apple should just peg their memory kit upgrades to whatever the fair market price is (that’s how everybody else does it) and just add a little bit extra for their time and trouble. They’d sell more memory upgrades that’s for sure.

Do yourself a favor, if you order a mac from Apple don’t configure the machine with more memory when you purchase it. Instead, shop around and buy a reputable brand of RAM memory from somebody else and install it yourself. On most new macs you just take a screw or two off and snap the memory into place.
