I do NOT recommend A-1 Heating and Cooling. Stay away from A-1 Heating.
I have not heard of any other bad experiences from any HVAC company in the area. So maybe I just had very bad luck.
It is a long 5 year story ending Jan 2006 and it is all negative. It ended with the air handler in our attic catching on fire (all contained inside the unit, thank God).
Various other things–they overfilled the heat pump with refrigerant on one service call (the system shut itself down after they left) and they charged me to come and remove the extra refrigerant the next day. I disputed the bill and they said pay up.
The system had a refrigerant leak. They waited until the third fill-up to mention I should call and schedule a leak check.
When I had the unit installed I paid for 2 strips of back-up electric heat in the air handler(electric furnace). They only hooked up one strip (which I found out about a couple years later) and never fixed that.
One service call, when the system was out of refrigerant, they hooked up the 2nd strip of heat so I could heat the house. It was a cold January - we woke up to 59 degrees on the thermostat and the backup heat was running non-stop, but the 1 strip couldn’t handle it.
When they fixed the heat pump, they disconnected the 2nd strip of heat because the guy couldn’t figure out how to wire it properly. I believe that visit the guy either didn’t tighten down the wires he messed with or didn’t put them back right because that area of the unit is where the fire occurred–the next winter.
I called after the fire this year to ask if it was under warranty. They called me back and said (this is close to a direct quote) “Yes, it is under warranty. May we send someone out just to look at the system, to evaluate the situation and see where we stand?”
I said, just to look? OK.
They came out, looked for 5 minutes, said “I have to talk to the boss to see if they want to order parts or just put in a new air handler.” They called the next day and said it was no longer under warranty. It expired about 8 months ago.
They sent me bill for a service call! I called to dispute, they said pay up. I said could the owner please call me. They said OK I will have him call you. He never called. I didn’t pay as I was waiting for him to call.
A few weeks later I got a notice in the mail to pay and they have added finance charges to my bill for it being late.
To top it off, A-1 wanted $1800 to replace the air handler. I got a free visit from a fella who looked at the burnt unit for free and he quoted $800 to replace the air handler with a new one.
